How AMD and Samsung want to make our smartphones “real” consoles

Determined to take mobile video games to another level, Samsung and AMD are proud to present the fruits of their collaboration and to spread their ambitions.

While we learned some details about Samsung’s plans for mixed reality at the start of the year, the giant obviously has big ambitions with its next SoCs.

Samsung and AMD: a renewed collaboration?

In 2019, we learned of the signing of a multi-year agreement between Samsung and AMD. In fact, this consisted of dressing the Soc Exynos of Galaxy smartphones and tablets with Radeon graphics chips. The promise was already clear: increased graphics performance and ultra-low power consumption.

In 2022, the Galaxy S22 (European versions) were the first Korean smartphones to benefit from the Xclipse processor powered by AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, therefore including support for ray tracing. Visibly satisfied with this union, the two giants, AMD and Samsung, have decided to extend their agreement to several generations of GPUs.

When Samsung and AMD want to compete with consoles… on mobile

For years to come, Samsung and AMD definitely seem to be aiming much higher. The Korean manufacturer has indeed mentioned their joint desire to titillate the world of game consoles in terms of graphic quality on mobile. In addition to discussing its future ambitions, Samsung also took the opportunity to take a first look at this first union with AMD in terms of the design of graphics processors:

“With AMD, Samsung has revolutionized mobile graphics, including through our recent collaboration that brought ray tracing to mobile processors for the first time in the industry. Leveraging our technology expertise in designing ultra-low power solutions, we will continue to drive innovation in mobile graphics. »

If this kind of statement necessarily always leaves a little dreamy, it is still good to remember that the Exynos 2200 was not as efficient as we could imagine. We bet that the new generation will still be more successful, although it will still take some effort to obtain a result that will jeopardize the chips from Qualcomm or Apple.
