How AMD wants to triple the performance of your games and supplant Nvidia’s DLSS

On the sidelines of Gamescom 2023, AMD has finally revealed information on FSR 3, its competing technology to Nvidia’s DLSS. And we can say that the manufacturer did not hold back. But will that be enough?

Announced last year during the presentation of its RX 7000 graphics cards, the release of the 3rd version of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) was long overdue from AMD. This new version was to provide an answer to its competitor’s DLSS 3 and in particular to its flagship feature, the Frame Generation. AMD’s version, which is titled here Fluid Motion Framesis a variation of another of its technologies, AMD Fluid Motion Videowhich added additional frames to video content, such as intelligent frame interpolation.

AMD has revealed initial support for two games when this new version is released: Forspoken And Immortals of Aveum. The first had a complicated release at the start of the year, to say the least, but had a certain arc of redemption following the successive patches it received. During the presentation, the contribution of FSR3 allowed the game to climb to 122 FPS in 4K and effects of ray tracing at maximum, against 36 FPS with the option deactivated. This is an absolutely considerable gain approaching 340%, coupled of course with the work ofupscaling of the option Super Resolution at the heart of technology. Patches integrating the FSR3 for these two games should arrive at the beginning of the fall.

FSR3 missing from Starfield at launch?

The most surprising are the games that are not presented with the announcement of this new version of FSR, and one in particular: Starfield. AMD has indeed announced with great fanfare this summer an exclusive partnership with Besthesda’s space RPG expected for September 6. The announcement caused a stir as it implied the absence of Nvidia’s DLSS in the game, which sparked a rumble from gamers and specialist media. So the most anticipated game of the year wouldn’t have FSR3 when it was released? It is very likely.

The manufacturer took the opportunity to recall the opening of its own technology: FSR3 will be compatible with older generations of Radeon graphics cards, including the RX 6000 and earlier. Above all, his version of the Frame Generation will also be compatible with the GPUs of its competitors, here Nvidia and its GeForce (generation RTX 20 minimum), Intel and its Arc models. It is indeed Nvidia which is targeted first here while the brand notably reserves the latest version of its DLSS and its image generation technology for owners of RTX 4000 cards.

Finally, as aone more thing», AMD announced that FSR3 should be compatible with all DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games as long as you have an AMD card. The solution should indeed be integrated into HYPR-RX, the manufacturer’s answer to Nvidia Reflex, which will notably make it possible to considerably reduce latency while in some cases increasing performance. The brand will integrate the functionality into its pilots in the first quarter of 2024, so you will have to be patient.
