Google finally allows Android to automatically archive unused apps from your smartphone.

A simple and convenient way to recover precious storage space, without losing any data.

Android wants to make room on your smartphone

Good news for Android users who see their storage space close to saturation. Google announces the deployment of a new automatic application archiving feature. Similar to the “Unload unused apps” function on iOS, this function will allow you to “empty” certain applications, in order to recover storage, without deleting the applications concerned.

In order to reduce unnecessary uninstallations and help users install new apps successfully, we are introducing a new feature: AutoArchive “says Google.

In terms of operation, once the user has validated this function, automatic archiving can make it possible to automatically free up to 60% of the storage space of an application, and this, without removing the presence of the app, or even user data on the device.

An automatic (and intelligent) archiving system

Automatic archiving thus makes it possible to free up storage, without deleting the archived application. The icon of the latter remains present on the smartphone, but displays a small cloud-shaped logo. When you want to use the application again, just press the corresponding icon to download it again, and pick up where you left off (provided of course that the application is still available on Google Play).

However, Google specifies that not all Android applications will be compatible with this feature, which is reserved for applications published in App Bundle format.

According to Google, this new feature is a simple and convenient way for users to manage their device’s storage… but also a great way for developers to reduce the likelihood of having their apps completely uninstalled.
