The tool for running Windows games on macOS is getting a small, big update.
Revealed at WWDC 2023, the famous Game Porting Toolkit is indeed in version 1.0.2, which intends to significantly improve the performance of the games in question. This new version of the open source tool is already available in particular on Github through a dedicated page cited in source below.
A carrying tool that wears well
Among other updates to the macOS Sonoma system, players of the Apple brand can rejoice to learn that the porting of Windows games to the platform is experiencing some progress. This goes through a small new version 1.0.2 of the Game Porting Toolkit, which however makes a big difference.
This update to the Game Porting Toolkit intends to significantly improve the performance of Windows games on macOS. This notably involves 32-bit support and the integration of fixes for rendering and stability problems encountered on the original version of the tool.
This was indeed the cost of untimely crashes, especially during cutscenes using specific codecs. According to the admission of testers of the tool, the situation has improved significantly with version 1.0.2.
Tool approved by testers
YouTuber Andrew Tsai notably split a video going into more detail on this update, which takes the opportunity to increase the weight of the tool from only 53.4 MB to 27.9 MB.
The videographer highlights in particular the fact that FromSoftware’s crowned game of the year 2022 Elden Ring saw a 20% performance boost on an M1 Max compared to the previous version. Same observation for other titles like Arkham Knight.
Apple seems in any case to continue its efforts on the video game side, after years of stagnation, even if there is still a long way to go. Let’s bet despite everything that it is not the Mac players who will complain about it.
