how color can radically transform a film

The Joker returned to theaters on October 2. With its orange and blue contrasts, green neon lights, a greenish Gotham… the first part released in 2019 had already marked its extensive use of color. This work earned the film an Oscar nomination for best cinematography. Joker: madness for two continues this exploration. At a time when Hollywood is going crazy for desaturated images, Joker by Todd Philipps make color a key element of the narrative: it helps to tell the complexity of a character struggling with his identity.

This narrative use of color, cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) made it his trademark throughout his career. His work inspired a generation of cinematographers, including Lawrence Sher (Joker And Joker: Folie à deux).
