how did we arrive at the Oslo Accords?

September 13, 1993 is considered a historic date in Israeli-Palestinian relations: on that day a declaration of principle was signed leading, a year later, to the first Oslo agreement. The day is marked by the handshake between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Yasser Arafat. In 1994, a second agreement, Oslo II, focused mainly on the sharing of the West Bank. The goal is to put an end to decades of confrontation and conflict, and this includes mutual recognition of Israel and the PLO.

In the second episode of our “Microfilms” series, we trace, through our archives, the history of these agreements and the reasons why the peace process failed.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of World, twice a month, the editorial team revisits the major historical events which have shaped our society and which our journalists have witnessed. We invite you to watch today’s episode, on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
