How Discord wants to get closer to WhatsApp, Messenger and others

Discord is reviewing the copy of its mobile application in order to better suit its use with a smartphone. A symbolic change for a service intended primarily for computers.

Discord is a step closer to many other instant messaging services. If it is best known for servers (like that of Frandroid), Discord is also a private messaging application, like Messenger or WhatsApp. It announces important changes to its mobile application.

A new interface for the Discord mobile application

The tabbed navigation at the bottom of the screen has been changed. From now on, you have access to servers, messages, notifications as well as settings and your profile. The first tab which allows access to the servers no longer allows you to consult your private messages, but the layout remains similar (especially to the experience on PC).

The notifications tab displays all messages that mention you, whether in private messages or in server channels. There are also friend requests and server events.

When Discord becomes more like any other messaging app

The messages tab has been completely redesigned and looks like Messenger, with the name of the group conversation or your correspondent, the profile photo(s) of the interlocutors as well as a short extract of the last message. As the Discord blog states, above this list of conversations, “You can see what all your friends are doing right now, whether they’re in a voice room, playing a game or Activity, or just listening to music on Spotify.» In addition to that, certain conversations can be favorited so that they always appear at the top.

A search option allows you to browse all the messages and files in your discussions, unlike before where you had to go to each conversation to search for a message. A menu allows you to display all shared media and links as well as pinned messages and discussion threads.

Beyond the interface changes, Discord prides itself on having improved the performance of its application. For example, opening time was reduced by 55% on Android and 43% on iOS. Moreover, “the mobile app now uses four times less data on first load and keeps your most recent messages in the background», writes Discord on his blog. Finally, the number of app crashes on Android has been reduced by half.

Features coming to Discord or improving

Replies to a message no longer require clicking on said message and then clicking on “Answer“. Just slide your finger from right to left on a message to do so, like on other apps. In beta for several months and activated using a secret manipulation, the midnight theme is now deployed for all smartphones equipped with an Oled screen.

At the start of the year, the size limit for files that can be sent increased to 25 MB. In addition, the mobile application allows more files to be sent simultaneously. When viewing a photo that has been sent to us, we can scroll to view previous photos, without having to leave the interface. Another change: when several photos are sent in a message, they are no longer displayed in real size, but grouped together in a grid.

The new version of the Discord app is rolling out to all iOS and Android users. If you don’t have access to it yet, don’t worry and wait.
