Not everyone is aware, but it is quite possible to deactivate the option that allows other users to tag you in their publications, stories or comments. This option is enabled by default on Instagram for everyone, but by digging into the settings of the app, it is possible to allow only a few users to mention you, or even to disable it completely.
How to turn off mentions and tags on Instagram?
To start, you need to go to the settings section of Instagram. Open the app on your phone and go to your profile by tapping on your photo at the bottom right of the screen. Once on your page, click on the top right on the 3 vertical lines: this is what gives you access to the menu. Once inside, select the “Settings” section.
Once in the “Settings” section, click on “Privacy”, whose icon is a small padlock. In this section you will find many useful settings to limit access to your account. This is where you can set your account to private, or block certain users. Here, what interests us is the “Mentions” part, whose icon is an “@”.
In this section, you can choose who can mention you on Instagram. You have three options: either everyone can tag you, only people you follow, or no one. You cannot choose users one by one. It is also not possible to choose according to the type of publication: if you choose not to allow anyone to tag you, your friends will not be able to mention you either in their storiesneither in their comments, nor in their videos, nor during their lives, nor in the captions of their photos. People who try to mention you and who do not have the right to do so will see that you do not accept mentions.
Restricting mentions is a drastic and very effective measure if you feel overwhelmed or drowned in Instagram notifications. This is also an easily reversible measure, should you ever wish to be tagged in posts again.
