How does Queen Elizabeth II celebrate the New Year?

Just like Christmas, December 31 and January 1 are particularly important dates for the Royal Family of England. Here are their little end-of-year traditions.

New Years Eve is fast approaching. This year may not have the same flavor as the others for the Queen since it is the first that she spends without her late husband, Prince Philip. In recent weeks, the bad news seem to accumulate, but, she is not the type to let down. After her traditional Christmas lunch was canceled, Elizabeth II had to give up going to her Sandringham residence where she usually spends the holidays and on December 25 a gunman broke into the grounds of Windsor Castle.

If no official announcement regarding the New Year’s Eve of December 31, 2021 has been made, the evening promises to be very calm. Queen Elizabeth will likely remain in Windsor due to the dazzling progression of the Omicron variant in the UK and new health measures introduced by the UK government. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the monarch and her husband, Philip, were organizing an elegant evening New Years Eve in Sandringham, for their family and loved ones to end the holiday season on a high note. Of course, there was no question of such a risk-taking for his majesty this time.

The queen starts the year with aplomb

Usually the queen likes to start the year in going to mass, in the little church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham, but this year she will have to make do with the private chapel at Windsor Castle. Not really the style to hang out in their pajamas in the living room, the Windsors are participating in an organized hunting party on family lands on January 1. Here again, the sporting outing seems compromised for the moment.

On the side of grandchildren of the queen, Kate and William could decide to spend the New Year with family at the Middletons, parents of the Duchess of Cambridge. As for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle: the Sussex couple They are sure to celebrate the New Year surrounded by their closest friends in their sumptuous Californian villa, which they rarely leave since their move in.
