On January 24, 2023, the 2nd season of the “HIMYM” spin-off series “How I Met Your Father” started on the US streaming service Hulu. But that alone is not enough joy, because the new episodes also give us the surprise return of a beloved character.

Barney Stinson aka Neil Patrick Harris (“A Series of Unfortunate Events”) makes a brief appearance in the first episode titled “Cool and Chill,” but it won’t be his last on the show.

In the episode, Sophie (Hilary Duff) leaves her mother, Lori (Paget Brewster), with a frantic voice message saying she thinks she’s dating her father when she crashes her car. The driver’s door of the damaged SUV opens and we see a familiar face. Sophie got into Barney Stinson’s car.

Of course, in the present, their children immediately ask if Barney is their father. But Mama-Sophie (Kim Cattrall) only answers that with “We’ll get to that soon enough”.

In an interview with the US magazine “TVLine”, the series creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger already reveal that Barney is not the father of Sophie’s children. Nevertheless, he will still play a crucial role and appear in a few other episodes.

When we talk about bringing members of the old cast into the story, it’s for a purpose. For one, we offer a little insight into her life after “How I Met Your Mother”. Second, we show how they influence the story of How I Met Your Father. Similar to last season’s Robin, we’ll get to know more about what Barney does. But he’ll also have a big impact on Season 2’s plot and main narrative.

Neil Patrick Harris played Barney Stinson in all nine seasons of the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother. After meeting Ted (Josh Radnor), he became a regular part of the group of friends and we quickly learned more about his life.

So far we cannot say how he will continue to influence Sophie’s life. All we know is that he will not be the father of her children.
