how is this income taxed?

Question to an expert

Will I pay taxes on the amounts I earn by reselling items on the Internet or through carpooling?

The collaborative economy is based on the sharing or exchange between individuals of goods (clothing, tools, car) and services (carpooling, DIY), for remuneration or not.

Digital networking platforms, such as Blablacar and Leboncoin, must transmit to the tax authorities each year the receipts that you make, from the first euro or, depending on the case, beyond 3,000 euros or twenty transactions (for the sale of second-hand goods, carpooling).

But just because this income is pre-filled on the return does not mean that it will necessarily be taxed.

Exempt household appliances

Thus, “co-consumption” activities, such as carpooling, are not taxable if the transport is carried out as part of one’s own trip and the sums requested are lower than the costs incurred (fuel, toll). The exemption also benefits the carpool allowance paid by the authorities.

Are you selling second-hand goods? Many of them (books, clothes, jewelry) are not taxed if the selling price is less than 5,000 euros. As for the sale of household appliances or a used car, it is still exempt.

Otherwise, capital gains from the sale of second-hand goods will generally be taxed at 36.20% (19% income tax, 17.2% social security contributions), with sometimes deductions, depending on the duration of detention.
