As part of its annual report on the state of the mobile, the data analysis provider data.ai provides several major information on the use of the smart phone by consumers.

This major player in the digital economy published its annual report on Wednesday. State of Mobile 2023, based on the analysis of 100 million data points in more than 30 countries around the world. We learn in particular that on average, the time spent on a smartphone has increased by 3% over one year and now reaches 5 hours per day and per user.

More downloads, less spending

Among the major trends to be drawn from the report, let us note that of the demand for mobile applications which accelerated quite significantly in 2022 compared to the previous year (+11%), with 255 billion downloads. Quite logically, the number of hours spent on these applications has also increased (+9%) and is measured at 4.1 trillion by data.ia.

Greater usage and more downloads does not mean that consumer defenses have increased. On the contrary, they even decreased in 2022, by around 2% compared to 2021, to reach 167 billion dollars. ” Economic headwinds impacted discretionary spending “, explains the company author of the report. And that includes third-party Android marketplaces in China.

With regard to video applications in particular, the priority was in the short format (such as TikTok) among mobile users. Users streamed 3.1 billion hours of content, up 22% from the previous year, with spending on these video apps reaching $5.6 billion, or 55% more than in 2021. Enough to contribute to the increase in the income of certain content creators.

The top video on mobile

Short-form video apps aren’t the only ones to have benefited from the increase in the amount of time consumers spend on their smartphones. So-called “OTT” (Over-The-Top) apps like Netflix or Disney+ continue to be more popular on mobile, with spending reaching $7.2 billion in 2022.

Data.ai estimates that this year mobile ad spend is expected to exceed $362 billion. These should be driven by the growth of short-form videos and video-sharing applications like TikTok, we were talking about it, and YouTube, which remains very powerful.

Spending on game apps was down 5% year-on-year, to a total of $110 billion, despite the rise in downloads (+8%, $90 billion in total). Driving simulation games were among those that drove year-over-year download growth.
