How Mini and Pikachu created a tech-packed electric car

The collaboration between Mini and Pokémon presents different technologies around the Aceman concept car which will see the light of day in a production version from 2023.

Mini has announced that it has become the title sponsor of Gamescom 2022 in Cologne, Germany, which runs from August 24-28. The British car manufacturer, part of the BMW group, took advantage of the event to unveil a special version of its latest concept electric vehicle.

Thanks to a special partnership with Pokémon, yes, you heard that right, the Mini Concept Aceman has been rebadged with a central infotainment display dedicated to Pikachu, an Electric-type Pokémon. Beyond the central display, an animated Pikachu will be able to interact with the dashboard using projection technology. Same thing in front of the vehicle, where a video projector has been installed.

It looks like it comes in the same type of packaging as the Pokemon figures and features Pokeballs on the wheels. But, the most interesting part of this concept is that you can, actually plug in your game console and then use the outdoor projector to play outside. We are obviously talking about a concept car, this feature will certainly be absent on the production vehicle.

An Aceman model that we will discover in 2023

The Aceman model had already been presented, it is a concept car: “ the MINI Concept Aceman gives a glimpse of a new model, which will bridge the gap between the Mini Hatch 3 & 5 doors, and the Mini Countryman “. Inside, the touch screen is round, as on the standard models. However, it is changing very significantly, in particular by using OLED technology for the first time, which is more reactive and makes it possible to offer thinner screens, while guaranteeing more intense colors.

The dashboard is itself animated by colored projections, which should probably not pass the production stage. On the other hand, customers of the production version should benefit from the infotainment system based on Android AOSP. This means that Mini does not want to integrate Android Automotive or even Google Automotive with fewer compatible applications, while BMW has chosen to integrate Android Automotive, but without Google services.

We expect to discover the production version next year for a launch in 2024.
