Coffee is the Germans’ favorite pick-me-up. Everyone drinks an average of two cups per head. Is that too much, even harmful to health?

Black gold, elixir of life, office drug – coffee lovers are creative when it comes to finding new word creations for their favorite drink. While some cannot get going in the morning without a cup, others need several cans throughout the day. In the morning, at noon, in the afternoon, and for dessert after dinner, another espresso – that’s how you get a few cups of coffee a day. But isn’t coffee dangerous to health, is it a burden on the heart and stomach? No, say the latest studies! But how much is too much? We clarify!

Is coffee healthy or unhealthy?

In the morning without coffee out of the house? For the majority of Germans it is almost unimaginable. Although we are not the most excessive coffee drinkers in a European comparison: indoors – the Scandinavians are clearly ahead of the game – we still get an average of two cups a day. And that is quite healthy, confirms Prof. Christian Sina, Director of the Institute for Nutritional Medicine at the Lübeck University Hospital.

The black brew had a bad reputation for a long time, was even considered harmful to health, and would have a bad effect on the heart and stomach – but the latest study results prove exactly the opposite. A British study in the summer of 2018 found out that coffee has a positive effect on our health: “Roasted coffee is a complex mixture of over 1000 bioactive compounds with potentially therapeutic antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cancer-inhibiting effects.”

Coffee consumption: the measure is decisive

One thing is clear: coffee is not unhealthy per se, but it is important to keep your coffee consumption moderate. Prof. Sinan explains that a certain dose should not be exceeded: “Most people shouldn’t have more than three to four cups of filter coffee a day, and not more than two at a time.” Then it could actually turn out to be negative health consequences such as sweating, diarrhea, headaches, increased nervousness and even heart palpitations.

First of all, let’s enjoy a nice, large cup of hot coffee!
