How much less polluting are electric cars than thermal cars? This study has the answer

A study shows that in one of the largest countries in the world, driving an electric car pollutes much less than driving a thermal car. The difference between the two is very significant.

If you are asked to provide an essential benefit of electric cars (VE) on thermals, there is a very good chance that you will spontaneously answer: “they are less polluting”. And indeed, such a vehicle releases fewer pollutants in the exhaust. We must certainly not forget that in terms of fine particle emissions, the gap is smaller, or that you have to drive for a certain time before an EV has a positive impact. But overall, the latter does exist.

A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) measured the average emission levels of electric cars by comparing them to “efficient” thermal cars. As a point of reference, they chose a gasoline vehicle consuming 57 mpg (mile per gallon), or approximately 4.13L/100km. The aim was to answer the following question: at what point driving a watture is actually “cleaner” than driving a gasoline or diesel vehicle ? The results are very encouraging.

Electric cars pollute much less than their thermal equivalents in this country

The UCS concludes that on average, driving an electric car produces 33% fewer emissions than a thermal car who consumes little. This figure was calculated taking into account data from the entire United States. Moreover, unlike 2012 when only 45% were concerned, EVs are now significantly “cleaner” in 93% of the United States.

There are variations depending on the states in which we are interested, to the extent that not all produce the electricity necessary for cars in the same way. This does not prevent the authors of the study from emphasizing the importance of the results obtained: “For the first time, we see that for everyone in the United States, driving the most efficient electric vehicle produces fewer global-warming emissions than any gasoline-powered vehicle currently available (including non-plug-in hybrids). )“.
