Who will be the new coach of FC Bayern? The rumors offer all kinds of names, but sports director Max Eberl sees no reason to comment on them. But one of the candidates doesn’t really support his current club.

One shows humor, the other has lost his calm: Coach Roberto De Zerbi from the English football club Brighton & Hove Albion, who is also allegedly courted by FC Bayern, has not yet decided on his sporting future. “I have a contract, but I want to talk to my club to understand their plans. Then we will make the decision together,” said the Italian before the game at Liverpool, according to the BBC (3 p.m./Sky and in the ntv.de live ticker). The 44-year-old is also said to be a candidate for the Reds because coach Jürgen Klopp is known to be leaving the club in the summer.

Bayern need a new coach from the summer because the collaboration with Thomas Tuchel will end prematurely. Preferred candidate Xabi Alonso announced on Friday that he would also be on the sidelines at Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen next season.

As a result, sports director Max Eberl continually receives questions about who he wants to sign for the coming season. He reacted with humor in the ZDF “Sportstudio”: “I actually wrote to friends of mine: ‘You’re looking for eggs on Sunday and I’m looking for the trainer.'”

Eberl does not comment on rumors

Basically, the 50-year-old doesn’t want to let anyone look at his cards. “I know that the whole public is interested in this and that everyone wants to share in the thoughts we have. But I have never commented on a name,” said Eberl after the 0-2 defeat in the classic against Borussia Dortmund, when asked about rumors a return of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. He “also heard that Antonio Conte was already sending me lists of players. You can see how perverse and how strange it all is.”

Eberl doesn’t want to be disturbed by the many speculations that range from Zinédine Zidane, Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick to Unay Emery, Hansi Flick and De Zerbi. “We’re really doing our job. We’re checking, we’re checking, we’re clear about what we want and we’re trying to implement it.” That’s why Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen “no longer affected him at all, because we had already been somewhere else for a long time.”

De Zerbi is one of the lesser-known names on the list. Before Brighton, he coached the top Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, but left in July 2022 due to the Russian invasion. In September 2022 he joined Brighton and finished last season in sixth place in the Premier League with the team, for which national player Pascal Groß also plays. That meant qualification for the Europa League. But there it was over in the round of 16 against AS Roma. The Italian’s contract with the club, which is currently in midfield, runs until 2026.
