How Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat overtook Tesla on electric cars in Europe

Thanks to a strong increase in its sales in October 2023, Stellantis is the group that sells the most electric vehicles in France this year. Its electric utility vehicles weighed heavily in the balance.

Carlos Tavares has long been quite critical of the 360-degree turn taken in Europe regarding the thermal car. However, the manager, at the head of a group of 14 brands, has been able to adapt and Stellantis now offers a wide range of electric vehicles in its catalog.

Making electric accessible is the desire of many groups, and Stellantis is today one of those offering the cheapest electric cars on the market, before the arrival next year of the new Citroën ë-C3 from 23,300 euros, excluding bonus, and another version in 2025 with 200 km and from 19,900 euros, still excluding bonus.

A sprawling range for spectacular results?

These more accessible products allow Stellantis to show good health in the electrical sector. Thus, in the month of October, the brands Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Opel, Peugeot as well as light utility vehicles showed growing volumes.

Combining passenger cars and utility vehicles, Citroën shows growth of 12.5%, DS Automobiles of 8.8%, Fiat of 17.8%, Jeep of 93.2%, Opel of 31.3%, and Peugeot by 4.8%. Nice scores to be put to the benefit of several important launches, including that of the 100% electric Jeep Avenger, deliveries of which have just started and hence this significant growth.

Alfa Romeo (+53.9%) and DS Automobiles (+19.5%), the two brands in Stellantis’ premium division, are also progressing, but rather thanks to their plug-in hybrid models.

With these good results, Stellantis is the leader in the field of electric cars in France, on the PC and LCV markets, with 27.6% market share and 70,023 registrations in total. Please note that these figures do not distinguish between so-called “tactical” sales, i.e. registrations of models before they are even sold, and sales correspond to deliveries to customers. This is why we speak of “registrations” and not of “sales” strictly speaking.

In Europe, Stellantis even managed to overtake Tesla, relegated to 3rd place in terms of electric cars registered in Europe. In first place on the podium, Volkswagen reigns supreme.

Leader over time?

Concerning LCVs, Stellantis has just reviewed its entire range. It is the group that currently offers the most 100% electric utility vehicles on the market.. Consequently, Stellantis is the leader with, cumulatively over the first ten months of the year, 40% market share.

The group’s future results should go in the same direction, notably with the arrival of very relevant future products, including the Peugeot e-3008 which will arrive next year, and its version with 700 km of autonomy planned for 2025. As stated above, the Citroën ë-C3 should be a hit in France next year, while the restyled Peugeot e-208 should allow the Sochaux city car to continue to be among the leaders in the sector.

Be careful though, competition will also sharpen next year, notably with the arrival of the highly anticipated Renault R E-Tech, even if its price has (already) been revised upwards and will be around 30,000 euros more. and not 25,000 as initially announced.
