How to boost the collagen in the skin?

With age, the skin loses firmness and radiance, the muscles relax and wrinkles appear. In question, a decrease in the production of collagen, a protein essential for the proper functioning of the body. But then, how to stimulate it?

“Collagen is a real building material for our body. It gives shape and defines the texture of all our organs and tissues”, explains Yegor Domanov, LPG Research and Development Innovation Director, whether it is skin, teeth, hair, tendons, ligaments or even blood vessels. “Collagen gives flexibility to our skin, provides resistance to our tendons and strength to our bones”, indicates the specialist. This is why, as we age, it is necessary to draw collagen from other resources, especially food and food supplements. Anti-aging creams also contain this protein capable of restoring elasticity to the skin and acting on wrinkles.

What is collagen?

“Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body”, says Yegor Domanov. It represents about a third of the dry mass of our body, that is to say without counting water, another vital element for our organism. “If we could zoom inside our skin, we would see a network of microscopic strings – which are none other than bundles of collagen molecules – which intertwine to give our skin strength and suppleness in same time”. The human body naturally secretes collagen. “The fibrous collagen network is woven so as to maintain the shape of the skin despite the deformations it undergoes. The mechanical properties provided by collagen define the shape of the skin and therefore its visual appearance”, indicates the specialist. However, under the effect of aging, the production of this protein decreases sharply. The body no longer produces enough of it. Studies show that around the age of 50, collagen production can decrease by nearly 25% and more than 40% around 60-70 years.

How to boost collagen production?

“Over the course of life, the collagen network in our skin constantly adapts, remodels and repairs itself. But this is not automatic. The ‘maintenance agents’ that maintain this framework every day are the specific cells. , fibroblasts, which roam inside this network and synthesize new collagen in the right place “, considers the specialist. Mechanical stimulation may be necessary “to speed up labor”. “A skin massage is really the best natural way to stimulate fibroblasts to produce collagen and to restore firmness to the skin”, he specifies. Certain cosmetic or pharmaceutical active ingredients have the power to stimulate the production of collagen. “But since these are external components of the body, the dosage and the approach must be personalized according to the skin types in order not to unbalance the skin”, Yegor Domanov believes.

Are there foods rich in collagen?

Animal products contain collagen. “But it is not much use to consume more to produce more”, considers the specialist. “Any protein we eat is broken down in the intestine. What is needed is a balanced diet, with a sufficient supply of protein, microelements and vitamins, especially vitamin C.” Kiwi, orange, lemon, strawberry, blackberry, in particular, are naturally rich in vitamin C. Green vegetables such as broccoli, green beans and peas, rich in anti-oxidants, also have the power to fight against premature aging of the skin. As you will have understood, food contributes to the health of the skin.

What are the most effective treatments to restore radiance to the skin?

Serums, creams, masks… Collagen is used in many facials. But it is not the only star anti-aging molecule. “In addition to water, the three components of the skin, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are all key factors for the balance and health of the skin. They are, in particular, recognized for their mechanical properties. They bring firmness, suppleness, elasticity and softness to the skin. They also give it a smooth and homogeneous appearance “, considers the specialist. For better efficiency, apply the cream to the face and neck, paying particular attention to the areas that tend to mark themselves. You can perform small circular massages so that the treatment penetrates completely. Remember to also apply your cream in the evening, because it is during the night that the skin cells regenerate.
