How to change your username on Instagram?

Instagram provides a tool in its settings to change your username. But there are a few things to know before getting started.

You created your Instagram profile when you were much younger and you no longer really assume your nickname of Gro-DouDou-du-78, BGdutierquar or DarkNaruto? We understand you. Fortunately, the social network provides everything necessary to change identity and leave with a new virtual “face”.

How to change your username in Instagram?

Instagram has made the user journey to change your handle very easy.

  • Log in to the Instagram website with your account;
  • Click on your profile picture, top right;
  • Choose the line ” Settings ยป ;

You then have two lines to consider. The first is the name, which serves as the display name. The second is the username, i.e. the one that appears in the URL associated with your profile. The two do not have to be identical. On the other hand, the user name is unique: it makes it possible to distinguish the accounts between them. Clearly, there is only one instagram.com/numerama.

You can change the display name as you want and it may happen that several accounts have the same one. Several people called Julien may want to highlight it, for example. The only constraint: Instagram limits any changes to twice every two weeks. So think a little ahead so you don’t find yourself blocked for 14 days.

Regarding the username, you have to be more careful: once changed, it may then be unavailable forever, if someone else gets it later. In addition, the possibilities are much narrower. There is only one account on Instagram that can be reached with a URL like instagram.com/julien. And it’s not me.

In other words, you don’t have quite a free hand and you’ll have to find something that hasn’t already been taken. Another disadvantage: if you modify your user name, this has the effect of invalidating the address that pointed to the old pseudonym (unless it is taken over by a third party). You will then have to update all the sites on which you have shared it.
