How to deeply moisturize your hair?

Like the skin, hair needs to be perfectly hydrated to stay healthy. However, there are many factors that can make them dry. How to remedy this and restore hydration to the hair fiber? Discover all our tips for a successful beauty routine!

Hydration is the key to a healthy body. This is also the case for the skin but also for the hair. It is necessary that the hair fiber is well hydrated so that the hair retains its elasticity and shine.

The hydration of the hair is provided by the sebaceous glands which are found at the roots of the hairs and hair. They secrete sebum, an oily substance, which smooths the scales of the hair, prevents dehydration and maintains flexibility and shine. If excessive sebum production causes oily hair, the scalp may not be producing enough sebum which causes the opposite effect. The hair then becomes rough and brittle, with a "straw" effect. How to remedy this problem to regain perfectly healthy hair? Here are all our tips for dreamy hair!

What Are the Causes of Dehydrated Hair?

Before trying to solve the problem, it is essential to know the cause of the dehydration of the hair. Dry hair usually results from low sebum production, it can be genetic or caused by aging, environmental conditions, over washing, overuse of chemicals or even hair styling. Long hair, for example, is more likely to become dry because the sebum does not have time to reach the scalp to the ends. Repeated use of heating devices, such as hairdryers, curling irons, or straightening irons, can weaken the hair cuticle. The hair fiber is then sensitized, which makes it prone to dehydration. Additionally, there are lifestyle factors that can be responsible for dry hair. Thus, striving for a healthier lifestyle can maximize the results of treatment to restore moisture to the hair.

Know your hair type

There are different types of hair, so the care to hydrate them can vary from person to person.

Fine hair is naturally less susceptible to dehydration because sebum can more easily travel from the scalp to the tip of the hair. However, certain habits can lead to dry hair. To restore hydration, suppleness and shine to the hair, it will suffice to use about twice a week a shampoo specially designed for fine hair (Volumizing shampoo for fine hair without volume "Rice and Wheat Volumizing Shampoo", € 21, Khiels) as well as a revitalizing treatment (Leave-in revitalizing spray with green tea and calendula, € 32, John Masters Organics) in order to detangle, hydrate and soften them. Once a week, you can include a hydrating mask in your beauty routine (Hydrating hair mask + treatment, € 24.99, Hello body) that we apply only on the tips so as not to weigh down the rest of the hair. You can also opt for jojoba oil (pure jojoba oil, € 7.90, Mira) which is ideal for fine hair because it hydrates and nourishes it deeply without weighing it down.

Thick hair will need a deep moisturizer that we choose preferably enriched with shea butter (Hair mask reconstituting Shea, € 15, The Body Shop) because thanks to its high content of fatty acids and antioxidants, it intensely hydrates and nourishes dry hair. It is also essential to protect your hair with a thermo-protective spray (Plant thermo-protective spray, € 16.56, René Furterer available on hairstore.fr) to create a heat shield around the hair before using heaters.

Curly, frizzy or frizzy hair is dry hair because sebum has a harder time going around the curls to hydrate the hair from roots to ends. Yet hydration is the key to perfect definition of curls or frizzies. It is essential to use products suitable for dry hair to deeply hydrate it. We then use shampoo, conditioner and mask specially designed for this type of hair. We avoid overwashing which tends to dry out the hair, we just wash it once or twice a week. As with thick hair, don't forget to spray heat protectant spray on your hair before using heaters. The vegetal oils are also ideal for hydrate and nourish deeply curly, frizzy or frizzy hair. We particularly like coconut oil (Coconut oil, € 13.90, Waam Cosmetics), avocado oil (Organic avocado oil, 4.30 €, The company of the senses), argan oil (Organic argan oil, € 11.98, Bionoble) or just the olive oil in your kitchen. Once a week, you can do an oil bath that you leave on overnight before rinsing with plenty of lukewarm water when you wake up. In your daily beauty routine, place a few drops in the palm of your hands before rubbing them to heat the oil in order to apply it to the lengths.

Mature hair tends to get dry because the activity of the sebaceous glands decreases due to the natural aging process. For this type of hair, it is therefore important to use a shampoo and conditioner for dry hair (Conditioner for dry & damaged hair, € 8.50, Coslys available on Onatera) as well as a hydrating mask to compensate for the loss of this sebum production. To maintain beautiful hair, you can apply a daily leave-in conditioner or a little vegetable oil.

Shampoo, quite an art!

Good hair hydration begins with the shampooing step. It is essential not to wash your hair every day or too frequently. Time is left for the scalp to produce its natural oil to hydrate the hair. Washing once or twice a week is more than enough not to attack the hair. If the roots get greasy too quickly, all you have to do is use a dry shampoo (Dry Shampoo "Unicorn", € 4.50, Colab available on feelunique.com) between two washes.

Shampoos and other hair products are rinsed thoroughly with clean water. We also avoid washing the hair with hot water as this could dry it out even more, we prefer lukewarm or cold water.

Protect your hair every day

Extreme weather conditions, especially sun or wind, can dry out hair. For this, it is useful to spray a UV protective spray (Milky Moisturizing Protective Hair Oil, 15.50, Nuxe Sun available at Nocibé) in summer over the entire hair, mainly during prolonged exposure to the sun.

Protecting your hair also involves daily actions such as brushing. Preferably, a boar bristle brush is used in order to distribute the sebum over the entire hair. We recommend that you not brushing your hair too frequently as this can damage them making them drier and more brittle.

About every three months, we go to the hairdresser to have their ends cut to remove the split ends so that the hair is stronger and healthier.

We also recommend that you sleeping on silk pillows which are as good for the skin as they are for the hair. Thanks to the very smooth texture of silk, the hair slides over the pillow, thus avoiding friction, while cotton can damage and weaken the hair fiber or even lead to premature hair loss. This helps prevent frizz when you wake up. Moreover, silk preserves natural hydration of the hair fiber while cotton is an absorbent material that dries the hair.

Avoid chemical products and stains

Chemicals should be avoided when you want to regain good hydration for your hair. This will prevent frizz and the hair will be more silky and disciplined.
To provide hydration and nutrition to the hair, apply a night mask or an oil bath with a suitable vegetable oil once a week. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or even better, in a silk scarf to leave the treatment on while you sleep. In the morning, the hair will be perfectly hydrated, nourished and healthy.

Chemical dyes dry out the hair enormously. It is essential to use colors without ammonia so as not to damage the hair. Can also bet on a vegetable coloring in salon or at home (Permanent coloring with plants, € 9.95, Khadi available on sebio.fr). The powder is mixed with water until a paste is obtained which is applied to all of the hair which has been washed beforehand. You wrap your hair with cellophane or a heating cap (Heating cap for coloring at home, € 35, Biocoiff) and let sit for an hour before rinsing thoroughly with lukewarm water. Unlike chemical dyes, vegetable dyes heal the scalp and the hair then regains hydration, shine and volume.

Do not overload the hair

Hydrating treatments and masks are essential to deeply hydrate the hair. However, there are a few tips you shouldn't ignore when using them.. Apply a moisturizing treatment or mask only to damp hair, so that they can properly absorb the product. We start by depositing the treatment or the mask from the ends and moving up strand by strand towards the middle of the hair. Avoid putting it on the scalp unless it is extremely dry as the hair tends to grease too quickly.

While it is possible to use leave-in care daily, we just use a deeper treatment only once a week so as not to weigh down the hair.

What natural tips to hydrate the hair?

There are several natural remedies to restore moisture to the hair and the majority are ingredients found in your kitchen.

Eggs and mayonnaise, for example, are great for moisturizing the hair. These two ingredients contain a lot of protein which helps to strengthen the hair fiber and restore hydration. Once a week, you can make a mask using a whipped egg white that is applied to the scalp and all the hair. Just massage for a few minutes and rinse with clean water.
We can also concoct a richer mask using eggs, a little olive oil and honey. The mixture is applied to the scalp and all of the hair before covering it with a shower cap or cellophane for at least 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with clean water before shampooing.

The Greek yogurt oily, natural and unsweetened is a particularly effective treatment to restore moisture to the hair. It is mixed with about two tablespoons of olive or avocado oil and a few drops of ylang ylang, geranium or lavender essential oil. Apply to all of the hair and leave on for about twenty minutes before rinsing well with lukewarm water and then shampooing.

The applesauce but also other fruits such as pear is particularly moisturizing. We do not hesitate to mix it well or to use baby compote to prevent fruit strands from sticking to the hair. It is necessary to leave it on for several hours on the entire hair that is covered with cellophane or a shower cap. The compote is rinsed with plenty of lukewarm water. We can do without shampoo because it has a washing effect.

Bananas are the allies of dry hair thanks to their potassium and water content. It helps prevent the appearance of split ends but also restores the elasticity of the hair fiber and softens the hair. Simply crush a banana and spread it over the hair from root to tip to enjoy its benefits. Leave on for about an hour and rinse with lukewarm water.

The aloe vera is an excellent remedy to deeply hydrate the hair fiber. Thanks to its moisturizing and nourishing properties, the gel of this succulent plant strengthens the hair and detofixes the scalp. Aloe vera can be used alone in gel (pure aloe vera gel 99.9%, € 17.50, Corpore Sano available on Naturitas) or by combining it with coconut oil or yogurt and a little honey to make a very hydrating homemade mask that you leave on for at least an hour on the entire hair. The hair will then be healthier, shinier and softer.

have a healthy diet

Eating healthy improves general health, which is reflected in particular on the skin and hair, which will be much healthier. For perfectly hydrated hair, it is important to favor foods rich in omega-3s and antioxidants.

Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines or even tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and proteins which strengthen hair elasticity. Eggs, like white meat, are high protein foods that boost the production of keratin, a natural protein that makes up 97% of the hair's main material.

Lentils, soybeans as well as all legumes as well as whole grains ensure good hair health. Fruits and vegetables in general but mainly blueberries, nuts, spinach or even broccoli are excellent for the hair. Skimmed milk provides calcium and vitamin D and deeply hydrates the hair. Finally, more surprisingly, chocolate contributes to the beauty of the hair thanks to its high iron content. You can then have fun while taking care of your hair!

Rice water is great for the hair, don't throw it away!
