India missed the Moon, but still does not admit defeat. Four years after the Chandrayaan-2 crash, the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) is trying to land a mission there. The new probe, dubbed Chandrayaan-3, was launched into space on July 14, 2023. It must land not far from the south pole of the Moon on Wednesday August 23, 2023. The event can be experienced live.

What to expect ?
After a long journey to the Moon, the Chandrayaan-3 probe settled into orbit around the star on August 5. Several maneuvers were planned to reduce the size of the craft’s orbit around the Moon and position it above the poles. The propulsion module separated from the lander, confirmed ISRO on August 17. After a series of braking maneuvers, the lander must now land smoothly on the Moon on August 23.
The landing of Chandrayaan-3 is a delicate step: even in 2023, landing on the Moon remains difficult. Very recently, a failure by Russia brought this to mind once again: the Luna-25 probe crashed on the Moon on August 20. The Russian mission was supposed to land not far from the target site with Chandrayaan-3, which could give the impression of a “race” between Russia and India to land on the Moon.

Will India become the fourth country to successfully land on the moon? For the moment, only the former USSR, China and the United States have managed to land on the Moon without damage since 1966. The stakes are therefore high for India, which hopes to join this very closed thanks to Chandrayaan-3.
