How to get rid of static electricity in hair in winter? A hairdresser responds: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

The cold snap continues to rage. At a time when temperatures are freezing almost everywhere in France, we have big knitted sweaters, down jackets, scarves and hats… as well as static electricity in our hair. Although we could have done without it, this phenomenon returns more than ever when temperatures drop. As soon as we put on a turtleneck, our hair stands up on our heads and gives us a hard time. What are the causes of this hair circus? How to cure it ? On TikTok, Lyon hairdresser Alex Urbane gives us the keys to getting rid of it.

Causes of electric hair: why do I always have static electricity in my hair in winter?

To try to understand the phenomenon of electric hair, we have to delve back into our college physics books. All matter is composed of atoms themselves formed by electrons with positive and negative charges. When rubbed with a wool sweater, a hat or a hairbrush, the negative charges of the electrons are stripped and your hair is then unbalanced because it is only positively charged. They repel each other like magnets and are attracted by the slightest negative charge around them. This phenomenon is accentuated in winter due to the weather. This happens frequently in winter simply because the weather outside is rather humid and inside the temperature is quite warm and above all dry. As a result, your hair will try to defend itself.”explains Alex Urbane on a TikTok video.

Shampoo, hairbrush… How to get rid of static electricity?

To overcome electric hair, you should adopt certain good daily habits. For Alex Urbane, this involves purchasing an air humidifier to humidify the air in your home and not dry out your hair. Also, it is better to avoid clothing made of synthetic fibers such as acrylic which is a conductor of electricity and to favor natural materials.

Your hair routine should also be reviewed. We opt for a hairbrush with natural bristles and avoid those with plastic. “A brush with plastic in it, you’re obviously going to comb your hair and it’s going to come up,” explains the hair specialist. You can also opt for a more hydrating conditioner. “Go for a range that is a little more nourishing, all to weigh down your hair and so that it has a filter, a certain fatty substance around it to prevent the hair from flying away”, adds Alex Urbane. Just like nourishing conditioners, serums and oil baths can protect hair.

Anti static electricity: how to calm electric hair?

Your hair is already standing on end and you don’t know what to do? Use a hairspray type styling product or water to remove static. You can spray a little water on your hairbrush and run it through your lengths for example. Your hair is now well disciplined!
