How to make an emergency passport? : Current Woman Le MAG

The passport is an essential identity document for traveling abroad. This document is normally valid for 10 years and must be renewed within six months after its expiration. But if you cannot wait the usual duration of the procedures, you can make an emergency request.

What can be the urgent reasons for making a passport?

To obtain a temporary passport, you must prove the urgency of your request. To do this, you must justify an urgent trip, in particular for humanitarian or medical reasons (such as a serious illness or the death of one of your loved ones), or an unforeseen business trip that cannot be postponed. Even if you meet these conditions, please note that the emergency passport is issued exceptionally and not automatically.

How to apply for a passport urgently?

To request a passport urgently, you must send a request to the prefecture of your home, to the civil status service. You will then need to provide a certain number of supporting documents:

  • your old passport if you have one (the original and a photocopy);
  • an identity photo less than six months old meeting official criteria;
  • proof of address less than three months old (original and photocopy);
  • a 30 euro tax stamp;
  • proof of the urgency of your request.

What are the special conditions of this passport?

If your request is accepted, you can obtain your identity document the same day. If this is not possible, you will obtain a receipt which will allow you to collect your document a few days later. You will then have to sign it on site and return your previous passport. Please note that this emergency passport is only valid for one year and does not allow you to travel to the United States without a visa.
