When to start the evening porridge?

Around the age of five at six months, we start with midday porridge in baby food, which is then the first meal other than milk. Once the little one is used to it, we can then introduce a porridge in the evening. Especially for cereals, it is important not to give them to your baby too soon, because their intestines are not not yet able to digest them properly. The age of six months is a safe bet. Conversely, be careful not to wait too long for him to eat it because cereals contain essential elements for the good development of the little one, such as protein or the iron.

Make baby porridge yourself

There are many commercial ready-to-use porridges, just like powders to mix with milk. Even if the packaging ensures that the porridge has everything you need for your baby, you are convinced that nothing beats a good porridge carefully prepared by his mother (or his dad). If homemade porridge is very easy to make, it also offers certainty to know what's inside. Porridges sold in supermarkets for example contain cereals, but also sugar and additives.

To prepare your baby's cereal porridge, you will only need three ingredients: cereal flakes, whole milk, so qa little fruit juice (fees of course). The fruit is essential because it contains a lot of vitamin C and thus allows the body better absorb iron present in cereals.

Instant flakes are ideal for evening meals. They dissolve quickly in a hot liquid and respect the still sensitive area of the baby's palate. If possible, at the start, it is best to give the child only flakes gluten free, like rice or millet for example. From the seventh or eighth month, you can switch to oatmeal. Babies do not need variety, on the contrary, the introduction of too many different cereals increases the risk of allergies. Also, to start, choose only one type of cereal for her evening porridge.

The third important ingredient is milk. Be sure to use whole milk with a fat content included between 3.5 and 3.8%. This contains calcium, high quality protein and of iodine.
