How to protect your official documents with a watermark

Before sending a copy of ID to a stranger, it is possible to protect it with a watermark. A public service site allows you to stamp a document in a few clicks.

If you are embarking on the search for accommodation for the start of the school year, or if you need to send official documents to a third party, it is recommended that you take precautions. Among the classic protections, it is, for example, possible to affix a watermark, that is to say a logo or a text on the whole of the image which will act as a stamp. This prevents the recipient from reusing the document for malicious purposes.

Many sites offer to do this for free on the web, but we recommend that you simply use the new tool put online by the public service in August 2023.

Add a watermark to any document

The process will take less than two minutes.

  • Visit the website: filigrane.beta.gouv.fr
  • Select your file.
  • Write the text you stamp. If it is a request for housing, put the date, for example, and specify the announcement for which you are applying.
  • Download the file.

Identity theft is a common scam, especially when looking for accommodation. The criminals ask for identity documents during a false announcement before opening a bank account in an online establishment with these documents in hand. A watermark prevents the reuse of these images.
