How to sew a zipper? : Current Woman The MAG

Pearls & co reveals its super easy tutorial to learn how to sew a zipper quickly. On a clutch, pencil case or even clothes, you can, in no time (and with a sewing machine), put on zippers like a pro! Here is the material you need, as well as the production steps. Let's go !

The material for attaching a zipper to the sewing machine

  • 1 sewing machine
  • 1 presser foot suitable for zippers (often supplied with your machine)
  • 1 pouch (or other object you want to sew, such as a pencil case for example)
  • fabrics
  • 1 zipper
  • sewing thread
  • needle
  • 1 pair of scissors

The stages of realization

Step 1 : cut two rectangles of fabric a little wider than the zipper and long enough to cover its ends from the metal stops of the zipper.

2nd step : add 1 cm of margin lengthwise. Sew them to the zipper, placing them right sides together. Sew close to the metal ends (without sewing on them as this may damage your sewing machine).

Step 3: Then fold the rectangles, iron to flatten the seam and topstitch.

Step 4: place the front fabric of the pocket (or the item you want to sew) facing you and place the zipper back to you. So you have placed them place after place.

Step 5: place the liner right side up against the front fabric. Pin it all along the zipper.

Step 6: sew the zipper with a special zipper foot. Sew all the way with the zipper in the center before starting. Once you get to the center, lift your presser foot and pull the slider over the sewn part before you bind off your presser foot and continue sewing.

Step 7: turn the fabric the right way around.

Step 8: do the second side in the same way. Place front fabric and zipper right side to right side and the lining and zipper right side to wrong side. Repeat the steps 5 to 7.

Step 9: iron to flatten the seams and topstitch along the seam. Again place the cursor in the center of the zipper before you start to sew.

Step 10: place the lining right side up and the two front pieces as well. Open the zipper wide. Pin it all.

Step 11: sew while leaving an opening of 10 cm at the level of the lining. If your fabric is thick, do not sew at the zipper as you may block your machine. Sew as close as possible to it.

Step 12: cut the corners 2mm from the seam.

Step 13: turn your pouch (or other chosen object) through the space left at the lining and pop out the corners with a pair of scissors, chopsticks or knitting needles.

Step 14: close the hole in the liner by folding the seam allowance inside and sewing near the edge.
