How to sort your Nintendo Switch games into folders?

Five years after the release of the Switch, Nintendo finally adds the storage of games by folders to its console (update 14.0.0). Here’s how to clean up your home screen.

It took 5 years for the Switch developers to add sorting of games by folders to the console, when this function might have seemed obvious from the start. This fact reminds us of Bluetooth headset support on the Switch, which took 4 years to arrive. Nintendo always ends up listening to its fans, but takes its time.

How to put your Mario games in a folder, group your favorite titles and bring together your independent games in others? How to get rid of utilities (Pokémon Home, Animal Crossing Transfer Tool…) without deleting them? Numerama explains everything to you.

The mandatory 14.0.0 update

  • First, go to Console Settingsheading Console then Console update.
  • Install the latest version available, you need at least version 14.0.0.

Groups, to the right of the home screen

Unfortunately, Nintendo does not yet allow folders to be highlighted directly on the home screen. By default, the Switch interface in 2022 remains identical to the Switch interface in 2017. Recently opened games appear first, with a section to their right All software. It is in the latter that you have to go to create folders.

  • When you first open this section after the 14.0.0 update, Nintendo should prompt you to Create a group.
  • Otherwise you can press the L key from the “All software” menu to access the “Groups” sub-menu.

In the latter, we must choose Create a groupthen touch all the software you want to group together. Once they are selected, press Continued and we sort them, in order to choose which one will appear first. We click again on Continued and we give a name to this family of applications. The folder is created.

Once all your folders are done (a game can belong to several folders), you will need each time go to the All software section and to lean on on the L button to access folders.

We can always hope that Nintendo will allow its users to put groups on the home screen, but unfortunately it has not yet taken this opportunity. Anyway, if you have many games, this novelty is welcome.
