How to tame the cat and the frog in Hades 2 to have them as pets

To defeat Chronos in Hades 2, all means are good. You can even get help from familiars, these pets that can be tamed to make allies. During each run, Mélinoé can be accompanied by an animal. It’s not just cute: they’re useful in combat. Here’s what you need to do to unlock them.

Hades 2 Although it may only be in early access, Supergiant Games’ new hit already has a lot to offer. After around twenty hours of play, we are still far from having seen the end of it. The story continues; the trials of chaos have only just begun; the list of prophecies still remains very long; the arcane cards have not yet given their full potential; finally, the weapon aspects are barely arriving.

All these mechanics are partly inherited from the first Hades. But its successor also has its new proposals: the familiars. It is in fact possible to be accompanied in the game by a frog (Frinos) or by a cat (Toula) – a list which will undoubtedly grow with new pets, when the game is released in final version, at the beginning of 2025.

Moreover, the layout of the secondary zone of the Crossroads clearly leaves room for at least two other companions, or even three.

Frinos is pretty easy to find. The amphibian is perched on a stone surrounding the magical site in which Mélinoé reappears after each death, when a run ends badly. This is the area right before his room and it’s impossible to miss. On the other hand, Toula will only show up during your expeditions outside the Crossroads. For example, we come across the kitty in Erebus.

Frinos and Toula need to be tamed to be able to take them on board during your adventures (you can only play one at a time). It’s worth it: both beasts have interesting abilities that you can take advantage of during your sessions. For example, Frinos can help collect resources (solitary shadows), increase Melinoe’s life, intercept blows or do damage after a jump.

In short, Frinos and Toula are like Pokémon: we “capture” them, we take them with us, we make them fight (good news: they manage themselves) and we can improve their skills. Thus, we can benefit from a life bonus with Frinos, which has several levels. Toula can paw to fetch fish. One per night at level one, then two and finally three.

How to unlock pets in Hades 2 ?

Unlock pets in Hades 2 is not inherently very complicated, but time consuming. You will need to have several hours on the clock to advance the story and access resources found in certain levels. In particular, your discussions with Hecate (the first boss, and patroness of the Crossroads) should progress enough for her to suggest you bring a familiar.

This means that you will have to have managed to beat Hecate several times. The condition appears essential, since one of the ingredients necessary for the ritual to unlock the familiars is found in level 2 of the game, towards the underworld (the level is called Océanos). Indeed, Hades 2 relies heavily on incantations, crafting, and resource gathering in its gameplay.

When the conversation with Hecate progresses enough, the witch will give you the ritual of “Persuasion of familiar spirits”. This helps convince specific pets to follow you. For this, you will need at least one enchanted kibble. The good news is that the incantation gives you one right away. The following must be cooked with the magic cauldron (two kibbles per invocation).

The ingredients to obtain Frinos and Toula

  • Defeat Hecate (first boss of Erebus) a few times;
  • Collect lotus flowers in Océanos (underground level 2);
  • Collect nectar;
  • Advance enough in the story to unlock Hecate’s suggestion;
  • The “Persuasion of Familiar Spirits” incantation requires 2 nectars and 1 lotus flower;
  • Give the enchanted kibble to the animal of your choice;

To obtain other succulent croquettes (the other name given to this delicacy), you will need to gather 2 lotus flowers and 1 stardust for each preparation. Stardust is obtained by completing the Chaos Trials offered by the Abyss Crystal. Access to this crystal will require, again, a specific progression in the story and in the validation of certain prerequisites.

The Abyssal Crystal depends on another ritual, called “Abyssal Intuition”. Here you will need to regularly chat with Chaos in his realm. Stardust can also be obtained from the miserable merchant (which you unlock early in the game), for 800 bones (which you collect over the course of your runs). The same goes for nectar: the merchant gives up a bottle for 30 units of bones or obtains some during runs.

In summary :

  • Stardust: Obtained from the Wretched Merchant or via the Chaos Trials;
  • Nectar: obtained from the miserable merchant or during runs;
  • Lotus: obtained in Océanos (underground level 2);
  • Succulent Treat: Requires combining 2 Lotus and 1 Stardust

Note that casting succulent treats requires a small wait time — generally, one completed run in the meantime is enough, or if you spend the time at the tavern or in the thermal baths. Furthermore, it is likely that the first animal you will recruit will be Frinos, which is the most easily accessible. The cat actually requires a detour across the surface, towards Olympus.

Here too, access to the human world requires the success of two incantations (“Overcoming Magical Seals” and “Attenuation of Destiny Constraints”). You will also have to pass the very first boss (the Cyclops Polyphemus). In any case, this is how we were able to unlock Toula – he was in Erebus before moving into the open air, after certain incantations.

  • Frimos: Crossroads, before Mélinoé’s room;
  • Tula: Erebus then Strait of Thessaly, on the pier;

Note, for all intents and purposes, that your pets risk absolutely nothing during combat. They are invincible (and they are very lucky). Enemy attacks or environmental hazards (lava, jets of water, falling scenery elements, etc.) have no effect on their health. You can happily send them into battle. And then, who knows, maybe one of them will prove decisive when it comes time to take down Kronos?
