OpenAI may be going through a major leadership crisis, but its employees do not lack humor. In a short video published on X (formerly Twitter), the company announced that ChatGPT Voice, the audio incarnation of its well-known personal assistant, was now accessible to everyone. Enough to put Siri, Alexa and other Google Assistant in the closet or almost.
How to use ChatGPT Voice?
The announcement made on the microblogging network contains a little joke about the current situation of the company, since the voice that questions ChatGPT asks ” it was a long day for the team […] how many pizzas should I order for 778 people? “. But beyond the little touch of humor, the video shows the extremely simple operation of this virtual assistant, who also speaks French with a charming touch of American accent.
To start a discussion with the assistant, you must go through the application on iOS or Android. The functionality does not yet appear to be available on the web version of ChatGPT. Then, nothing too complicated:
- Make sure your app is up to date
- Launch the ChatGPT app
- Click on the headset logo at the bottom right of the window
- Click the “Continue” button in the window that opens
- Choose the voice that suits you best (they are in English, but the assistant speaks French)
- Allow the app to access your device’s microphone
- Formulate your query and wait for the assistant to respond
A very intelligent virtual assistant… but limited
ChatGPT Voice works like any other virtual assistant. It will answer your most mundane questions, can generate content on the fly or hold a discussion on any subject. In short, it is capable of doing everything that classic ChatGPT does, but with a helpful and reassuring voice. Moreover, the content of the conversations is immediately transcribed into the application’s text interface in order to more easily find the responses generated by ChatGPT.
As long as you stay in the voice typing interface, you can chat with ChatGPT without having to re-click the button every time. The conversation can last as long as you want and the voice assistant keeps the conversation topics in mind throughout the exchange. You can therefore ask him to clarify his thoughts on a certain subject or to reformulate certain details of his answers.
The only thing the assistant can’t do, compared to Siri or Google Assistant, is access data on the phone or your apps. It will therefore be unable to set a timer or launch a YouTube video from the ChatGPT interface.
Behind ChatGPT’s speech recognition tool and synthetic voice is the open source Whisper algorithm, developed in-house. The latter swallowed 680,000 hours of speech in several languages in order to best recognize voice requests in French, English or around forty other languages. The algorithm is even capable of juggling between languages within the same voice request.
