How to Use ChatGPT on Your iPhone With One iOS Shortcut

It is possible to use ChatGPT, a GPT-3 powered chatbot, on iPhone using the Shortcut app and an API key from OpenAI. This allows for the best of both worlds: Siri for common tasks and ChatGPT for text generation.

If you’ve used ChatGPT, you’ve probably looked down on your mobile assistant with disdain. Assistant, Alexa, Siri, these machines repeating the same misunderstandings and the same pre-recorded sentences, evolving only marginally since their release, seem well overtaken by the chatbot powered by GPT-3. But conversely, this same ChatGPT, which excels in conversation and in automating written tasks, does not know how to interact with what surrounds you at all. Weather, activation of home automation objects, reminders of your calendar… all of this is completely foreign to it.

Luck: With an iPhone, the Shortcut app, and an API key that you can retrieve with an OpenAI account, you can have the best of both worlds on your iPhone. Siri for common tasks, ChatGPT for text generation. The developer Joe Kennedy shared a creation very simple, based on the Shortcut application of iOS: in the same way that you can ask your iPhone to “pass” other assistants, you can ask it to use GPT-3 to answer a request. Here’s how.

How to Install ChatGPT on iOS

First, you will need to generate an API key for GPT-3. This key is private and unique, so we cannot share ours with you.

  • Create an OpenAI account (Sign Up at the top right of this page) or log in to your account.
  • On this page, once logged into your account, click on your account at the top right. Then click on View API Keys.
  • On the page that opens, click Create New Secret Key.

  • Copy the key and paste it somewhere. You will need it to make the shortcut work.

Then, you have to download the shortcut. Open this article on your iPhone and click the button below.

  • Click on Get Shortcut to install it.
  • Once the shortcut is installed, touch the three small dots at the top right and where you read “ADD API KEY HERE”, delete this text and paste your previously copied API key.
  • Press “OK” at the top right and you will have finished the configuration.

How to use GPTChat with Siri

You can test your shortcut by using it from the Shortcut app. This will allow the shortcut to use speech recognition and give it permission to access the OpenAI API.

Finally, configure a command to access this shortcut more easily.

  • Go into Settings > Accessibility > To touch > Touch the back of the devicechoose 2 or 3 times and scroll all the way down to select your SiriGPT shortcut.

By double tapping on the back of your iPhone, you will open the commands of GPTChat and you will therefore be able to speak aloud, in French, to ask it to perform an action.
