How to use ChatGPT to make your CV

Whether you’re looking for your first job or you’ve been in the business for decades, there’s one thing we all agree on: job hunting is a tedious process. As if finding a job that matches your qualifications and expectations wasn’t hard enough, you should also wrap up all of your work experiences and strengths in one application.

This application consists of many elements that you must additionally adjust, such as references, experiences, a cover letter, a creative portfolio and the most intimidating element for some: the CV.

ChatGPT is here to help make writing your CV a breeze.

How ChatGPT can help your job application process

You can use ChatGPT to help you generate ideas for your application from scratch, or to refine and optimize your ideas and texts, which may not be hitting the mark at the moment. But beyond that, it can help you answer questions about writing your resume and best practices. Here’s how to start.

Additional note: if you have access to Bing Chat, it can also serve as your assistant for this process, since it offers the same possibilities as ChatGPT, but with access to the internet.

  1. Choose a resume template

ChatGPT will help you write your CV, but before you can begin the writing work, you will need to choose a template. The program you use to write your resume — like Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Canva — probably already has a resume template.

A quick Google search for resume templates will also bring you hundreds of editable templates that you can import into the program of your choice. I recommend that you choose the one that best suits you and meets your needs.

You then need to go to OpenAI’s ChatGPT homepage and sign in or create an account. It’s free to use and the sign-up process is simple, requiring no credit card or obscure information. But be aware that this week, due to the arrival of GPT-4, the service is quite overloaded. So you may (and probably will) have to try logging in multiple times before you’re satisfied.

  1. Add text

If you want ChatGPT to generate your resume text from scratch, just ask it.

Whether you want him to generate your professional summary or just part of it, ask him directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, “Can you write a short, professional resume summary about my role as a tech journalist?” In seconds he did it, as shown in the photo.

Although ChatGPT is quite capable of providing ready-to-copy-and-paste content into a resume, you should tweak the text so that it’s personalized to your actual experience and doesn’t look to have been written by a robot. Ultimately, employers want to know what makes you unique, and without your help, the chatbot will only have access to generic questions about your role.

  1. Use ChatGPT to revise your own text

Whether you’ve decided to attempt filling out the template yourself before using ChatGPT Help, or you have an existing resume that you want to improve, ChatGPT is a great resource for fine-tuning your text. Just copy and paste your own text and ask ChatGPT to improve it.

For example, I asked ChatGPT: “Can you improve this part of the CV: I write articles on technology”. Within seconds, ChatGPT created a much more elaborate section that incorporated a professional tone and made that simple phrase more complex, as shown in the photo. Once you get your result, you can always ask ChatGPT to tweak it with prompts like “Make it shorter” or “Can you include [détails supplémentaires]”.
