How Uber is becoming a mobility “super app”

For the time being, only British travelers can experience Uber as the only place to book a bus, train or car. It all started last year when the company connecting VTC drivers and users tested the integration of booking Eurostar tickets but also buses in the country of His Majesty Charles III. In an interview given to FinancialTimes, Uber UK boss Andrew Brem highlighted the popularity of the new feature, citing a 40% increase in train bookings month-on-month since the launch last year. Become the mobility champion

These ambitions in terms of mobility were no secret: for several years, Uber had been offering itself some nice publicity stunts by announcing the provision of boats or private jets. In France, the UberSki service made it possible to climb to the top of the slopes while UberCopter caused a sensation during the Cannes festival in 2017 by offering to rally Nice to the Croisette by helicopter. The transition from the app to the search for electric bikes had more consensus. In the fall of 2018, the VTC app launched its first electric scooter service in San Francisco. Its transformation into a multimodal platform is therefore not new.

Except that now it’s the entire itinerary of a trip that becomes Uber’s battlefield. The San Francisco giant is indeed taking the next step, namely the possibility of booking a flight. To do this, a partnership has just been established with the Quebec tour operator Hopper, which makes it possible to find flash promotions, or to collect rewards in the form of carrots to be used on future hotel reservations or car rentals. On the Uber app, British travelers have access to domestic and international flights. The functionality will be operational from this summer and travelers will be able to complete all stages of the reservation, from choosing a seat to making payments.

Compared to its competitors, Uber is taking a serious step forward by considering door-to-door passenger transport. Neither Freenow nor Lyft currently offers such diversification in multimodal journeys. The German Freenow, owned by Daimler and BMW, had started from the outset by building a global offer, positioning itself more on urban mobility and thus counting on car sharing, the reservation of scooters, bicycles and hybrid bikes.

Finally, remember that Uber has already successfully diversified its business with the performance of its meal delivery service. In 2022, Uber Eats generated $10.9 billion, equivalent to 44% of its total revenue.
