Howard Carpendale: "Every day in the US writes a new story"

The US election is on November 3rd. Howard Carpendale "cannot imagine the election going like it did in the past".

The US presidential election on November 3rd is getting closer and closer, people around the world are looking forward to this day with fear. Singer Howard Carpendale (74, "At night, when everything is asleep") knows the USA well, after all he lived in Florida for some time with his wife, the American Donnice Pierce. He is happy to now be living in Germany again – also with regard to dealing with the Corona crisis. "I couldn't wish for anything else," he says in an interview with the news agency spot on news. "There are also other countries that are dealing well with the pandemic, New Zealand, Australia and South Korea for example. But I was very proud of Germany."

"My friends in America even mocked me a little because they said that if you give the Germans an order, they do it immediately. I said: Of course we will, we don't want to die. The Americans thought that is a harmless virus. 50 percent of people don't wear a mask today, "says the 74-year-old. On November 3rd, US President Donald Trump (74) faces his challenger Joe Biden (77). "For six months it has been very clear to me that this day will hardly go by without something that we have never experienced before," says Howard Carpendale. "Maybe we're lucky, but I don't think so. There are great dangers in the air. I can't imagine the election going like it did in the past."

Donald Trump re-election? "This is democracy"

What would he think if Donald Trump were to become US President again? "If that's what the Americans want – that's democracy," the singer replies diplomatically. "I would be surprised, but it's not that the result is already clear. Every day in the USA is writing a new story and incredible things happen. It's not over until it's over. Now this sentence applies really."

The last four years under Donald Trump have made him "stunned," says Carpendale. "Because it's the same country that 20 or 30 years ago didn't allow a president to run for office because he cheated on his wife at some point in his life." Now in the US "everything is accepted, from disgusting things to constant lies. I don't get it."

75 years is no reason to retire

Howard Carpendale will turn 75 in January – no reason for him to turn his back on the stage. Just recently he released his album "Symphony of my Life 2", for which he again worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His tour "The Show of my Life" had to be postponed due to the Corona crisis. Howard Carpendale wants to "continue to be on the way, but we cannot continue until we are given the green light".
