HPV instead of combination vaccine – 33 Salzburg children received the wrong vaccine

The state reports that two vaccines were confused during a school vaccination campaign in the Salzburg district of Hallein. Instead of Repevax against polio-diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, Gardasil9 was vaccinated against HPV.

33 children in a second class of elementary school are affected, the parents have already been informed. In addition, an information hotline to the vaccination doctor was set up for all those affected. The Gardasil9 vaccine against HPV is generally recommended from the 9th birthday, so in this exceptional case it was administered too early and therefore off-label. “We are now advising the parents on how the HPV vaccination can be completed. According to experts, there is no evidence that there is an increased health risk in such a case. In any case, the treating doctor is in contact with the legal guardians,” said State Medical Director Petra Gruber-Juhasz. “Unfortunate individual case” Gruber-Juhasz spoke of an unfortunate individual case. Normally, due to the standardized processes, a mix-up is very unlikely. The fact that this happened was probably due to the fact that the school had planned on Tuesday to also vaccinate older school children against HPV at the same time.
