“The battle for talent is in full swing”

Much has been said and puzzled about the new world of work in the past year and a half. One thing is clear: offices have filled up again, the old working life is coming back. While companies are still testing new models, the “War for Talents” is back in full swing.

In the summer the offices in Germany filled up again noticeably, but companies are still looking for models or working with temporary solutions. The flexibility between presence in the office and home office has become and will remain the norm, says Fabian Kienbaum, head of the personnel consultancy of the same name, Kienbaum Consultants. in the podcast “Zero Hour“:” The extremes are difficult: 100 percent presence or no presence at all. Many companies are currently setting up in the middle. “The most common models that are driven in Kienbaum’s experience are either 50:50 or 60:40, i.e. three days in the office and two days at home.

Finding the perfect balance for all employees is not an easy thing, because home office is “a highly emotional topic,” says Kienbaum. On the one hand it is important to consider the needs of the individual, on the other hand it is “a question of solidarity” and part of a “culture of trust” to come to the office regularly.

The recruitment agency business has clearly picked up again, in 2020 Kienbaum still spoke of a brief “hibernation” of the companies, which also led to a slump in sales at his company. “But we are observing that the mobility to really take on new tasks is not yet so pronounced,” reports Kienbaum, who moved to the top of personnel and management consulting in 2018. “On the one hand there is a certain uncertainty factor in some industries, on the other hand there is also a very cozy atmosphere. People think twice about whether they are looking for a new adventure.”

The fight for young talent had flared up again after the market was briefly in a state of shock in 2020. Just good salaries were no longer enough; topics such as sustainability and purpose also count for “young professionals”. “It is a generation that defines itself by how the employer positions itself,” says Kienbaum.
