Huawei Mobile Cloud Review 2022: More Than Just a Backup Service?

HUAWEI MOBILE CLOUD

The Huawei Mobile Cloud is pre-installed on Huawei and Honor phones and tablets. Our test from 2022 shows whether the storage is more than just a backup service.

Really only suitable for backup

The easy access to photos and videos in the browser and the possibility of data backup are positive features of the Huawei Mobile Cloud. As a smartphone-focused application, the latter should also be able to back up app data, as is possible with iOS, for example. We also miss functions for easily sharing cloud content. What remains is the system backup. If you can do without it, you will find significantly more extensive alternatives in our list of the best.

We liked that

  • Access via web browser
  • data backup

We didn’t like that

  • Backup content not specifiable
  • missing share function
  • Drive folder of no use
  • little “free storage space”

  6. Conclusion

If you use Huawei smartphones and tablets or Honor devices, you benefit from the Huawei Mobile Cloud. Cloud storage is an integral part of the operating system on devices of both brands. Huawei gives you five gigabytes (GB) of free storage. As our test shows, however, this can only be used freely to a limited extent.

Huawei Mobile Cloud in the test: Data backup with weaknesses

You can find the Huawei Cloud in the Android settings under Huawei ID and Cloud. Here you can see options for regularly backing up your device data to the Huawei Mobile Cloud. The automatic backup is welcome, but has weaknesses. Phone settings, contacts, calendar, memos, messages, photos and videos are backed up.

However, app data is not part of the data backup. In contrast to previous versions, you can now exclude certain data categories from the backup. It’s worth it if you want to save your photos on Amazon instead for a particularly cheap price.

Huawei Mobile Cloud in the test: photo and video options

The core component of a cloud application on mobile devices is the synchronization of photos and videos. In this regard, beyond the backup just mentioned, Huawei enables synchronization of photos and videos between all Huawei and Honor devices with the same Huawei ID. The synchronization works smoothly overall and is convincing in Huawei’s internal exchange. However, there is no automatic synchronization.

However, access to photos and videos in the cloud from other devices is less convincing. First of all, it should be positively emphasized that, in contrast to the competitor Samsung, Huawei has a more extensive web interface available, from which the Huawei cloud can be accessed independently of the operating system. You can also download a cloud app for your computer. However, access to the gallery works relatively sluggishly here.

Photos and videos can only be uploaded and downloaded here. However, we miss functions for simply sharing recordings with others via a link. Photo management and editing functions known from Google Photos and iCloud are also missing.

A function for easy content sharing is also missing on both the web interface and the smartphone – neither photos, nor videos, nor albums can be shared with third parties via a link. Huawei is wasting a lot of potential here.

Huawei Mobile Cloud in the test: Drive folder

Under the keyword Drive, the Huawei Mobile Cloud has a folder that can be filled with data of any kind and synchronized – and is therefore similar to classic cloud storage in terms of its functionality.

However, apart from the Huawei devices, there are no applications that could be used to supply the folder with content. Because apart from Huawei/Honor smartphones and the browser view, Drive cannot be called up. This will not fulfill the classic purpose of a cross-device synchronized folder. Also, there is a lack of the ability to share content here.

Free online storage can compete with paid alternatives in many ways. In this comparison, we clarify which are the best free cloud storage devices.

Huawei Mobile Cloud Review: Security and Server

Huawei promises to store all data exclusively on servers within the EU and to handle them according to EU data protection regulations. However, the provider does not provide any information on any encryption.

Since Huawei’s headquarters are in China, the question of data security is particularly important. If your data were on Chinese servers, the country’s secret service could gain access to them. However, if you are in the EU, a foreign company is also bound by European data protection law.

Huawei Mobile Cloud in the test: storage capacities and prices

All Huawei/Honor customers get five gigabytes of free cloud storage. Upgrades are available at market prices that depend on the contract period. Specifically, the following offers are available.

volume1 month term6 months term1 year term
50GB99 cents a month0.94 cents per month79 cents a month
200GB2.99 euros per month2.99 euros per month2.24 euros per month
2048GB9.99 euros per month9.99 euros per month6.99 euros per month

Huawei Mobile Cloud upgrade pricing

This puts the upgrade prices at an average level in a market comparison. However, you should only upgrade if you cannot do without the (already limited) device backup and need more than 5 GB capacity for it. More powerful alternatives are available for drive and photo features.

Huawei Mobile Cloud: How to cancel

Your Huawei cloud subscription will be extended by the originally booked period for a fee when it expires. If you want to prevent this, you must cancel the subscription before it expires. This can be done via the settings of your Huawei/Honor device. To do this, go to the settings and select “Account Management”. There you click on the item “Payments and purchases” and finally on “Subscription/Password-free payments”.
