Huawei P60 Pro in the test: camera phone with an unusual look

Huawei was once well on the way to replacing Samsung as the world’s largest cell phone manufacturer with its P and Mate models. After the US sanctions, new cell phones from Huawei are in short supply on the German market. With the P60 Pro, the company now wants to attack again.

The cell phone has been available in China since March. While you have the choice between the P60 Pro, P60 and P60 Art, Huawei will initially only offer the Pro version in this country. 1,199 euros for the variant with 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM and 256 GB of storage space. The cell phone is also available with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage for a surcharge of 200 euros. If you are interested in this variant, you can save more than 300 euros when buying it in the Huawei Store until June 5th.

Huawei has always focused on the camera and design in its P series. Let’s take a look at the latter first. Because you have never seen a cell phone like the P60 Pro.

The back of the Rococo Pearl color variant presented to us looks like it was made of marble. In fact, it is an unspecified glass, under which there is a film with mineral powder that creates the effect. The grain is different for each model, so your P60 Pro is unique. In the test, the “fake marble” turned out to be less susceptible to fingerprints and dirt.

However, if you don’t like the color variant called Rococo Pearl, you can also get the cell phone in classic black. The case also has an anti-fingerprint coating.

The processing is also impressive in other respects. The frame of the phone is made of metal. A hardened display glass is used on the front. This is not the usual Corning Gorilla Glass, but Huawei’s own development “Kunlun Glass”, which has only been used in China so far. It is said to be ten times harder than regular glass. Furthermore, the mobile phone is dust and waterproof according to IP68.

How does the Huawei P60 Pro feel? One thing is clear: With the dimensions 161 x 74.5 x 8.3 millimeters, the P60 is not a small cell phone, but comparable to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Nevertheless, it rests relatively securely even in small hands. This is ensured, among other things, by the display, which is slightly rounded on all four sides.

The power button and volume rocker are easy to reach, at least for right-handers. The fingerprint scanner integrated into the display could be placed a little higher, but unlocks the device reliably. Since the case is a bit slippery overall, we would advise you to put the P60 Pro in a protective cover for more grip. Conveniently, one is included with the cell phone.

If you take a close look at the back, you will also notice another change: the lettering “Leica” is no longer emblazoned next to the camera, but “XMAGE”. Huawei bundles its entire expertise in the field of cameras under the brand – this includes technologies such as the RYYB sensor, which celebrates its premiere in the P30 Pro.

Let’s take a closer look at the camera of the Huawei P60 Pro. Huawei installs a triple camera on the back. This consists of the following sensors:

• The main sensor has a resolution of 48 megapixels and has a variable physical aperture that supports four levels (F/1.4 to F/4.0). This allows you to play with the depth of field – for example in portrait shots. It is optically stabilized and uses, among other things, Huawei’s RYYB technology for optimal light output. According to Huawei, it should be three times higher than the P50 Pro.
• In addition, you also have a 48 megapixel telephoto camera that can also serve as a macro lens. It is also optically stabilized, uses RYYB technology and offers a comparatively large aperture of F/2.1.
• Last but not least there is an ultra wide angle with 13 megapixels.

Enough of the preamble, let’s let a few pictures do the talking for the camera:

As you can see, the Huawei P60 Pro delivers usable pictures in every situation. Even the zoom camera delivers comparatively sharp and detailed pictures in low light conditions – at least up to level 10. During the day you can also use the 30x digital zoom and take good snapshots with it . The super macro mode is impressive, with which breathtaking detail shots are easily created.

What we particularly like is that the P60 Pro’s camera app does almost all the work for you. You only have to select macro or night mode once, but usually all you have to do is simply press the shutter button and the camera will optimize the settings itself for the best picture. An ideal camera for anyone who wants great photos but has no idea about photography.

However, there is one drawback: Unlike the Galaxy S23 and Co., 8K video recordings are not possible. 4K with 60 FPS is the end.

What does the Huawei P60 Pro have to offer apart from the camera?

The display is an OLED display that measures 6.67 inches diagonally and has a Full HD resolution. Unlike the screens of its predecessors, it is now based on LTPO technology and can therefore display images with a frequency of 1 to 120 Hertz. This saves the battery. In the test we had nothing to complain about on the screen. Color reproduction, viewing angles and readability were always excellent.

When it comes to other equipment, however, you have to make some compromises. While the display can easily keep up with other current top smartphones, the Huawei phone falls behind in other areas. The cell phone only has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from the previous year installed, you have no access to 5G networks and the cell phone does not support eSIM either.

The consequences of the US sanctions are also becoming clear when it comes to software. An Android open source variant acts as the operating system. This is Android 12, even if the version number of Huawei’s EMUI 13.1 user interface suggests otherwise.

Furthermore, there are no Google apps on board – so no Google Play either. However, Huawei’s own app store “App Gallery” has caught up over the years. Depending on the category, you will find 30 to 60 percent of the most popular Android apps here – such as Sky Go, TikTok, DAZN, Snapchat or Tinder and of course WhatsApp can also be opened use the cell phone.

If you can’t do without Google apps, you also have the option of using an emulator called GBox. This brings you Google Play back to the device without much tinkering. However, it is not entirely undisputed in terms of data protection law.

Incidentally, the P60 Pro draws power from a 4,815 milliamp hour battery. One battery charge should get you through the day. The battery can be charged both at the socket and wirelessly. Charging with a maximum of 88 watts is supported – a corresponding power supply unit is included.
