Noble watch with many features

With the Watch 4 Pro, Huawei offers you an elegant smartwatch with a wide range of functions that can also be set up quickly. The only thing we miss is the option to pay by watch. In addition, the range of apps is still small.

We liked that

  • quick setup
  • Can also be used without a smartphone
  • large and bright display

We didn’t like that

  • Payment not possible
  • still small selection of apps
  • only available in one size

With the Huawei Watch Ultimate, the Chinese manufacturer recently launched a premium smartwatch for extreme athletes and divers. Now, with the Huawei Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Pro, there are two models for everyday use. The watches are also in the upper price segment with a price of 449 or 549 euros.

Is it worth buying? We tried the Huawei Watch 4 Pro for you and describe our experiences below.

design and processing

Huawei’s design of the Huawei Watch 4 Pro is based on classic watches. The 1.5-inch AMOLED display is enclosed in a circular housing. This has a rotatable and clickable crown on the right side as well as another button embedded in the case. Huawei does without a bezel surrounding the display.

According to the manufacturer, the case is made of aerospace-classified titanium. Huawei also alludes to this in the factory-set watch face, which shows a planet. If you don’t like this, you can choose from up to 20,000 (!) other watch faces according to the manufacturer. You can buy the Watch 4 Pro with either a leather or metal bracelet.

Huawei Watch 4 Pro in pictures

This is what the Huawei Watch 4 Pro looks like.

Our test device is the version with a metal bracelet. This comes with additional links to adjust the watch to your wrist size. Incidentally, no tools are required for this. You can simply click individual links on or off the bracelet using a small switch. According to Huawei, it is suitable for wrists with a circumference of 140 to 210 millimeters.

Due to the large display, it stands out on the wrist, if you are looking for a discreet timepiece, you should avoid the Watch 4 Pro. Because Huawei does not offer the Watch 4 Pro in other sizes. Overall, however, the Huawei Watch 4 Pro is a beautiful and elegantly manufactured watch that lives up to its premium claim.

Compatibility and Setup

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro can be used both with the iPhone (from iOS 9) and with Android cell phones (from Android 6.0). For our test, we paired the smartwatch with a Samsung Galaxy A52s. Pairing takes place on Android devices via the Huawei Health app. Due to the US embargo, you will no longer find this in the Google Play Store, but you can download it directly via a QR code that is displayed on the watch. You also need a free Huawei ID to set it up.

The setup is done quickly. After pairing the watch, you only have to agree to a few usage conditions and data protection notices and give the Huawei Health app on Android some permissions so that it can remain active in the background. Otherwise, notifications on the Watch 4 Pro sometimes arrive late. The whole process takes less than 15 minutes.

By the way, you can make settings for your Watch 4 Pro on your cell phone via the Health app or directly on the watch itself. However, not all settings are available everywhere. For example, the lower button of the Huawei Watch 4 Pro cannot be configured in the Health app. We think that’s a shame.

service

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro is operated directly via the touchscreen. There is even an on-screen keyboard for entering text, which is reasonably comfortable to type on. Alternatively, the watch also offers voice recognition. You can confirm entries with the crown, but if you turn it, you can zoom in or out with it – this is useful, for example, in the preinstalled map app Petal Maps.

The bottom button, on the other hand, only acts as a shortcut for popular functions that you can freely set on the watch. From the factory you call up the training app, among other things. You determine which function is called up exactly by the intensity of your pressure. Overall, the operation is intuitive and easy to learn.

functions

What can you do with the Huawei Watch 4 Pro? If the smartwatch is paired with a mobile phone, it can display notifications from it.

WhatsApp and Co. – Receive notifications from your cell phone

Unlike the predecessor, you can now reply to them – either with a predefined short answer, voice input or via the on-screen keyboard. With the Watch 3 Pro, the feature was still missing at the market launch and was only added later via a software update. By the way, you can customize the predefined short answers via the Health app on your cell phone.

Unlike watches with Google’s Wear OS, the Huawei Watch 4 Pro does not support the playback of voice messages. Pictures and locations are also not displayed on the clock. You have to open your phone to do this.

Control music playback on the phone

You can also use the clock to control the music playback on your cell phone. However, you can only choose from rudimentary functions such as start, pause, stop, forward and backward as well as volume control. You cannot access your Spotify playlist directly.

Pulse, temperature and more: collect health and training data

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro is suitable for recording your training data as well as checking your health. Thanks to the appropriate sensors, it can, among other things, measure your skin temperature, determine SpO2 value and pulse and carry out an ECG. What is new is the combination of these features in an app called “Health Glance”. Within a minute, they carry out a quick health check in which seven parameters are checked.

For the first time on a Huawei smartwatch, this also includes a breath test in which you are asked to cough on the watch. Based on the sound recordings and values measured at the same time, such as heart rate and temperature, the watch dares to make a forecast of your lung health. Unlike the ECG, for example, the breath test is not yet medically certified in Germany, which is why it can only be used as a guide and does not replace a visit to the doctor.

You can also link the watch to your Huawei ID and set it up for a family member – use it as a senior smartwatch. In this case, you will be notified by SMS if it falls or if irregularities are detected, for example in the heartbeat.

Can also be used without a cell phone: eSIM and App Store

The Watch 3 Pro from Huawei already offered the option of making the watch independent of the cell phone with an eSIM. What is new with the Watch 4 Pro is that the eSIM can now either have the same number as the mobile phone or its own number.

You can load apps from the pre-installed app store Huawei App Gallery. As already mentioned in our test of the Huawei Watch 3 Pro, the selection here is still comparatively small. Popular apps like Spotify, for example, are missing. After all, the Adidas running app and various apps for controlling your smart home can be found here.

What can’t the Huawei Watch 4 Pro do?

Not all features are available to everyone on the Huawei Watch 4 Pro. Which functions you can use depends on the paired device. For example, you can only control the camera on your cell phone if it is a Huawei cell phone. You will also not receive warnings about irregular heartbeats in your family members if you use an iPhone.

Furthermore, payments with the Huawei Watch 4 Pro are not possible. Technically, the watch brings everything with it. However, the appropriate software and contracts with banks and financial institutions are missing. Huawei is working on a solution here.

You can receive notifications from Google apps on the watch. However, Google Pay, Google Maps, Gmail and Co. are not available as apps due to the US trade embargo.

battery life

Huawei specifies the battery life of the Watch 4 Pro in standard mode as up to 4.5 days. With a special ultra-long battery life mode, it should be possible to extend it to up to 21 days. According to our first impression, the clock is really very economical, so that the values specified by Huawei seem quite achievable. Of course, this also depends on the intensity of use and the selected settings. For example, the always-on display and fall detection are deactivated ex works.

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro is charged via an enclosed station that is magnetically attached to the back. A full charge takes about 90 minutes. A power pack for the station is not included. However, it can also be connected to the PC via USB.

price and availability

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro has been available in German stores since June 13th. Huawei calls 549 euros for the Pro version. This makes the watch almost 50 euros more expensive than its predecessor at market launch. You can benefit from these discounts and perks in the Huawei Store until the end of June.
