Huge luck – athletes swept away by snow masses 400 meters

A 30-year-old ski tourer had an incredibly large guardian angel on Sunday in the Tyrolean St. Leonhard in the Pitztal. A snowdrift broke off above the Czech, dragged him down and triggered an avalanche. Probably also thanks to his avalanche airbag, the athlete remained unharmed.

On Sunday morning, the Czech went on a ski tour on the 3277 meter high Linken Fernerkogel in a group of four including a mountain guide. The mountain guide and the other two tourers were already at the summit, the Czech was still a few meters below. At that moment, a snowdrift suddenly broke off and took the 30-year-old with it. A slab of snow about 100 meters wide also broke away below the summit. The man freed himself from the avalanche. The tourer fell with the snow masses around 400 meters through a steep rocky gully. He managed to deploy his airbag, which only superficially buried him. The Czech was able to free himself from the avalanche on his own – unharmed. The emergency helicopter flew the 30-year-old to the landing site in Sölden. The other three ski tourers were also unharmed in the incident.
