Hummels is “really proud”
Disappointed BVB: “That’s how they always do it …”

Real Madrid wins the Champions League because Borussia Dortmund fails to convert a strong half into goals. And so everything takes its usual course: Real Madrid wins in the end. The title means “incredibly much” to their playmaker Toni Kroos, while BVB are “just disappointed at the moment”.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund, on ZDF): “We played a great game here. I’m really proud of the team. We showed a lot of courage, heart and footballing class. We missed the chance to score a goal and then conceded. That’s how they always do it, that’s also a quality, but today we also had a bit of luck in the match.”

Toni Kroos (Real Madrid, on ZDF): “Of course I wanted to say goodbye with this Champions League victory. The title means an incredible amount to me. The decisive factor was that we didn’t concede a goal in the first half. That would have been more than possible. It took a long time before we were the better team.”

Edin Terzic (coach Borussia Dortmund, on ZDF): “We played a great game and maybe we deserved a little more than 2-0. Especially in the first half we felt like we had them. From the first second we showed the whole world that we were here to win. The only difference was that they had the killer instinct that we lacked today. That’s why they deserved to be the winners.”

Sebastian Kehl (Sports Director Borussia Dortmund, at DAZN): “I’m empty now. We’ve been looking forward to this day, we’ve been working towards it, but now we’re exhausted. We were close, but it will take a few days. We’ve come here with a lot of energy, we’ll be proud of it, we’ll be proud of our performance in the final. But we’re still very, very disappointed, because you want to win a final like this.”

Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund, on ZDF): “At the moment you’re just disappointed, the disappointment is huge. You don’t get too many chances against Real Madrid, we had our chances and should have made something of them once or twice. Still, reaching the final is a huge success.”

Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid, on DAZN): “We have to be honest, Dortmund were the better team in the first half, they could have been leading 2-0 or 3-0. But they didn’t kill us, so we were able to come back. I love both clubs, I have a lot of respect for BVB. I will always be grateful for what the club has given me. It’s a shame that this direct duel had to happen now, but that’s just how football is sometimes.”

Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid, on ZDF): “It’s unbelievable that I’m able to experience this for the second time. It was a lot of hard work, respect for Dortmund. In the end, it’s a final, we always believe in it. They caused us a lot of problems, but we know that we have to suffer and we always get our chances, you can see that in the final score.”

Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid coach, on ZDF): “It was a difficult game, especially in the first half. In the second half we brought more rhythm and intensity into the game.”

Hans-Joachim Watzke (Managing Director Borussia Dortmund, on ZDF): “I’m totally disappointed, that’s completely normal. We did well, we should have taken the lead, then it would have been a different game. After just under an hour we got tired and Real took full advantage of that. You can’t blame the team, we played a good game. I’m proud that we’re here. When you dominate the game and then win at the end, as Real Madrid always does, it’s disappointing.”

Bernd Neuendorf (DFB President): “Borussia Dortmund can be proud of the past Champions League season. The defeat in the final against Real Madrid does not change that. Coach Edin Terzic’s team exemplifies virtues without which football would be far less important: team spirit, passion and joy of playing. As much as I feel for the Dortmunders, I would also like to congratulate our international players at Real Madrid, Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger, on their success. They have certainly increased my anticipation of the EURO in our own country, where we will see players from Dortmund and Madrid together in the German jersey.”
