A 31-year-old woman from Burgenland has become the victim of internet fraud. According to police information on Saturday, the woman from the Neusiedl am See district had given her account details on a fake site after placing an online order. Subsequently, criminals debited a mid three-digit euro amount.
According to the Burgenland State Police Directorate, the incident dates from last Thursday. The day after placing an order online, the 31-year-old received an SMS telling her that the package she wanted could not be delivered due to the missing house number. A link was also sent to solve the alleged problem. The victim did not realize that the website was fake. There she was asked to enter her account details. What the 31-year-old didn’t realize was that it was a fraudulent site aimed at stealing account information. The illegal booking was ultimately discovered by another person who had access to the victim’s account. A complaint was filed, two further debits were prevented by an account lock.
