Hundreds of euros returned – Wien-Energie customers will now receive a hefty refund

After an automatic tariff change with price changes last year, Wien Energie now has to pay its customers back money. An average household can get back up to 275 euros.

The specific refund amount varies depending on individual consumption. The payments should be made in the spring, said the Ministry of Social Affairs, which had commissioned the Association for Consumer Information (VKI) to take legal action against the energy supplier. Last year, Wien Energie had automatically converted its customers’ current contracts if they did not respond to a letter from the company . At the same time, the terms and conditions were adjusted so that price changes could easily be passed on to consumers. Numerous complaints led to lawsuits. Only customers who actively objected to the change remained with their previous tariff. This approach led to numerous complaints to the VKI, which then filed a lawsuit against Wien Energie. An agreement has now been reached in which the energy supplier undertakes to make compensation payments to all customers – both those who agreed to the tariff change and those who objected or did not respond. Higher repayments for gas consumption. For an average electricity consumption, a household receives between 40 and 75 euros, while for an average gas consumption, repayments of between 120 and 200 euros are possible.
