A prequel to a cult character from the saga

The success of the latest installment of this dystopian franchise pushes Lionsgate to return to Panem. Indeed, Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbirdanother prequel released in November 2023, collected $337 million at the box office, which convinced the studio’s thinking heads that it would be necessary to continue to explore the universe imagined by Suzanne Collins in the first novel Hunger Games published in 2008.

It’s very simple, frankness Hunger Games generated more than $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, with the second installment alone grossing $865 million. The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird was not as resoundingly successful in theaters but, as pointed out Varietyits budget having been only 100 million dollars, it made a sufficiently encouraging profit for Lionsgate to wish to continue the adventure.

In fact, Collins is currently working on a new book, which will be released in bookstores in 2025 and whose original title is Sunrise on the Reaping (Sunrise over the harvest in French). This will be about the 50th Hunger Games, which took place 24 years before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) in the initial saga.

As fans of this universe will remember, it is Haymitch Abernathy, mentor of Katniss and Peeta played by Woody Harrelson in the other films Hunger Gameswho won these games and will therefore be at the heart of this new prequel story.

We do not yet know who will be responsible for adapting the scenario. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien will oversee production for Lionsgate.

Waiting for 2025 for the release of the book The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reapingand 2026 for the release of the film, the saga Hunger Games centered on Katniss Everdeen can be found streaming on Prime Video.
