After introducing us to the creators of the games in a video unveiled this summer, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird, the prequel to the saga led by Jennifer Lawrence is revealed with a new trailer.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, to whom we owe the last three parts of the Hunger Games franchise, the film is adapted from the novel by Suzanne Collins published in May 2020. This prequel takes place 64 years before Katniss’ story. It centers on the youth of Coriolanus Snow, future President of Panem played by Donald Sutherland in the film saga.

The trailer, revealed above, presents us with a young Coriolanus Snow worried about his protégé: the tribute Lucy Gray. Did Snow once have a heart or was he already playing a role? This is the question that the film promises to answer.

The video shows a tree several times, the most diligent will have understood that it is the famous Hangman’s Tree, the subject of the song covered by Katniss in the Hunger Games films and written by Lucy Gray, “the songbird” of this prequel. A nod to previous films that fans of the cult saga will not have missed.

In The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird, young Coriolanus is the last hope of his lineage. The Snow family, once rich and proud, has now fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. As the 10th Hunger Games approach, he is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from District 12, the poorest and most despised of Panem. The charm of Lucy Gray having captivated the public, Snow sees the opportunity to change her destiny, and will join forces with her to tip fate in their favor.

Finally, Jason Schwartzman is Lucretius Flickerman, the presenter of the Games and ancestor of Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci).
