Hunter Biden pleads guilty to tax evasion and illegal possession of a firearm

The Hunter Biden soap opera is far from complete, but its legal translation has just made a decisive step forward. According to an official document published on Tuesday, June 20, the 53-year-old son of the American president has reached an agreement with the Delaware prosecutor’s office, agreeing to plead guilty in two cases. The first is a federal income tax fraud, in 2017 and 2018, for sums refunded since. The second relates to the acquisition of a firearm in 2018, when he was a regular crack user, an addiction he killed in his declaration of purchase.

Hunter Biden will face a two-year probation on this point and follow an alternative program to incarceration. A federal judge has yet to validate the agreement.

“As I understand the five-year Hunter investigation is resolved”, said Chris Clark, lawyer for Hunter Biden. The lawyer added in a press release: “I know Hunter feels it’s important to take responsibility for the mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He intends to continue his healing and move on. »

A prosecutor appointed by Trump

Joe Biden, who lost his son Beau in 2015 to brain cancer, has been a constant supporter of Hunter, despite his personal throes and the lawsuits. The latter was invited to the state dinner organized during the visit of Emmanuel Macron, in December. He also accompanied his father in April during a trip to Ireland.

This idea of redemption is miles away from Republican concerns. The candidates for the primaries have all denounced an agreement deemed complacent and privileged. Republicans have insisted for years on the contracts made by the son of the president with foreign companies, in particular Chinese, by taking advantage of the interpersonal skills of his father. According to them, the federal police (FBI) and the tax agents (IRA) would not have gone to the end of their investigations in terms of enrichment and conflicts of interest. They denounce an instrumentalization of justice, its politicization by the Biden administration, to spare Hunter Biden while overwhelming Donald Trump in the many investigations that target him. They deliberately ignore a detail: the Delaware prosecutor, David Weiss, was appointed by Donald Trump himself in 2018.
