Husband of enslaved woman arrested in China

The video had moved many Internet users. In the images: a woman chained by the neck and reduced to the status of a slave. Her husband was arrested by Chinese authorities on Tuesday, February 22.

Dong, that is the first name of the torturer, is accused with two other individuals of human trafficking. Eight officials from Jiangsu province, where the woman was found, were also removed from their posts, while nine others were punished to varying degrees. For his part, Xiao Huamei, suffering from schizophrenia, was taken care of by a hospital.

If Internet users suspected the woman of having been kidnapped by her husband, the authorities were able to give more details about her ordeal.

Xiao Huamei, 55, was reportedly abducted from her village in Yunnan. It was then sold several times, including one in 1998 for 5,000 yuan, or around 700 euros. An investigation is underway against six other people who allegedly participated in this traffic.

Filmed on January 28 by a blogger, the sequence revealed her deplorable living conditions, with a padlock on her neck, chains linking her to the wall of her dilapidated living space and frozen and unsavory food.

The discredited husband’s version

According to her husband’s version, visible in the video, Xiao Huamei suffers from mental disorders, which would explain this particular treatment intended to treat her while keeping her away from her children.

While many questions have remained unanswered about the nature of their relationship, one unknown remains: how could this couple have eight children when the one-child policy was abolished in China only in 2015?

Having gone viral in the country in a few days, with more than two billion cumulative views, the video was censored by the Chinese authorities ahead of the opening of the Beijing Olympics.

According to Le Monde, more than 48,000 women were bought by Chinese peasants in the 1980s.
