Hydrogen trucks: China unveils a tank with revolutionary autonomy

The Track1000 system, designed by China Aerospace and Technology Corporation (CASC), is an XXL tank specially manufactured for heavy goods vehicles. Its enormous capacity would give trucks unprecedented autonomy.

Hydrogen trucks have not said their last word. The escapades of the manufacturer Nikola are far from having tainted the sector, which continues to slowly progress. The CASC has just unveiled Track1000, a cryogenic tank, capable of storing up to 100 kg of liquid hydrogen which could take heavy goods vehicles more than 1,000 km in one charge.

Unrivaled capacity

This enormous capacity would make it possible to envisage a range of 1,200 to 1,300 km per charge, thus surpassing current models such as those from Daimler. The latter, like the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck, incorporate 80 kg tanks for a range of just over 1,000 km. On the other hand, for this to happen, its efficiency would have to be equivalent, and for the moment, nothing guarantees this.

The company said in a statement: “ The new system is produced entirely domestically and will help hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks achieve an improved range of more than 1,000 km on a single charge “. A relocation of production which made it possible to reduce manufacturing costs by 30% compared to the previous generation of tanks.

Potential impact on the transport sector

If the Track1000 proves as effective as expected, transport companies could equip their fleets with it on a larger scale. We are certainly still very far from the ranges of certain models running on diesel such as the Mercedes-Benz Actros (2,000 to 3,000 km), the Scania R Series (3,000 km) or the Volvo FH (2,000 to 2,500 km). ) but the heavy transport sector is gradually moving towards decarbonization.

A transition driven by various factors, including increasingly strict environmental regulations. The EU is targeting a 30% reduction in emissions from new trucks by 2030 compared to 2019. In the USA, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is also imposing much stricter emissions reductions for the heavy weights. The CASC and its new Track1000 tank could well be of interest to the sector if its announced figures are accurate.
