Hypermotard 698 Mono – Ducati brings a single-cylinder bike with record performance

Single cylinder from Ducati? Yes, there used to be, but that was 30 years ago. But now the Italians want to fully attack this segment: The engine called “Superquadro Mono” is, so to speak, half of the V2 engine of the 1299 Panigale and will be the most powerful single-cylinder on the market. First, it comes in Ducati’s first single-cylinder supermoto called the Hypermotard 698 Mono.

A frontal attack against KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas – and a real statement in terms of performance and technology. The 659 cc engine comes with Ducati’s typical desmodromic valve control and produces 77.5 hp at 9750 rpm. Ducati gives a maximum speed of 10,250 rpm. as maximum torque 63 Nm at 8000 rpm. – exceptional values for a single cylinder. But that’s not even the end of the story: in the (not street legal) racing configuration with Termignoni exhaust there is a peak output of 85 hp at 9500 rpm. available. The 690 cc competitor stew from Mattighofen has 75 hp, its maximum speed is just under 9000 rpm.Pistons and parts of the cylinder head, including valve control, were taken from the old Superquadro V2 of the Panigale 1299; Cylinder and housing are new and made of cast aluminum. The crankshaft of the Superquadro Mono is asymmetrical and has two different sized main bearings. This is supposed to save weight. Two balancer shafts (one in front of and one behind the crankshaft) are intended to bring maximum possible calm to the whole thing. With the twelve-liter tank 90 percent full, the Hypermotard 698 Mono only weighs 159 kg – 3 kg less than the KTM 690 SMC . Fork and shock absorber are fully adjustable. Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires in sizes 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 160/60 ZR 17 at the rear are mounted on the lightweight cast rims. The front brake system consists of a 330 mm brake disc that was developed by Brembo specifically for the Hypermotard 698 Mono as well as a Brembo M4.32 radial caliper. A 240 mm brake disc is used at the rear, which was also specially developed.Electronics for aspiring professionalsThe electronics of the single-cylinder Ducati are intended to make it easier for less experienced riders to learn the typical supermoto riding style. The cornering ABS is intended to enable safe and reproducible drifts in two of its four modes. Learning to do wheelies is also supported – Wheelie Assist keeps the angle constant. The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono will be available from dealers from January – also for A2 riders. In this version, the Superquadro Mono delivers 43.5 hp at 6250 rpm and 49 Nm at 5750 rpm.
