Hyundai and Giugiaro on the trail of a new Pony Concept

Hyundai and Italian design bureau GFG Style, founded by famed father and son Giugiaro, have announced a collaboration to reissue one of the most important cars in Hyundai’s history: the 1974 Pony Coupé Concept.

This concept, formerly designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for the Asian manufacturer, served as a precursor to the Pony range, marketed from 1975 to 1990. For the anecdote, the designer was inspired by it later to imagine the emblematic DeLorean DMC- 12. Today, Hyundai and GFG Style are therefore returning to the drawing board for an important collaboration. The new design study will be presented in the spring of 2023.

“I designed the Hyundai Pony when I was still a young designer. I was very proud to be able to design a vehicle for a company and a country that was about to make a name for itself in a very competitive global market. Now I am deeply honored that Hyundai asked me to redesign the Pony for posterity and as a tribute to the brand’s heritage”said Giorgetto Giugiaro.

This isn’t the first time Hyundai has looked to the past for inspiration. In 2019, Hyundai introduced the 45 concept car, which itself influenced the design of the Ioniq 5 series electric car.

In 2021, Hyundai had restored and modified a Pony to make it an electric concept. And this year, the automaker introduced another Pony Concept-inspired concept, the hydrogen-powered hybrid-powered N Vision 74.

We are therefore waiting for what Giorgetto Giugiaro is preparing for this new reissue. SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Design Center at Hyundai Motor, said it will be based on the company’s philosophy: “Building the future while drawing inspiration from its heritage.”
