Hyundai Ioniq 5 restyled: the electric crossover is full of new features to take on the Tesla Model Y

Attractive with its trompe-l’oeil side and its style inspired by the 1980s, the Ioniq 5 faces stiff competition, particularly from Tesla and its Model Y, which has become the best-selling car in Europe. To return to the forefront, Hyundai unveils the restyled version of its Ioniq 5, first intended for the South Korean market, but which will arrive to us later.

Slightly reworked design

Divergent, but successful, the Ioniq 5, whose design was inspired by Giugiaro, could not be easily remodeled. The front and rear shields have been reworked to offer a slightly more dynamic line, while the spoiler has been lengthened to improve the CX.

The length of the electric car gains 2 cm. The Pixel lights have been slightly redesigned.

Still on the design side, a rear windshield wiper is now included. Unavailable at the moment in France, an N Line finish is making its appearance.

Larger capacity battery

The biggest change concerns the battery, whose capacity increases from 77.4 to 84 kWh. The range increases to 485 km according to the equivalent of the WLTP cycle in South Korea. A tour de force, charging from 10 to 80% is always done in 18 minutes. Hyundai also announces that it has worked on rolling noise and sound insulation.

Revamped interior

The center console remains, but gains an induction charger. It seems to be losing its removable side and that’s a shame. The drawer-style glove box is becoming classic again, probably for a more practical side.

This is probably the most important point. From now on, the Ioniq 5 features the Hyundai Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, a system capable of evolving over OTA updates. Until now, only updates fixing vulnerabilities were available. From now on, Hyundai will be able to add new features, including entertainment applications.

The Ioniq 5 erred on its software side. Today, on paper, it is catching up with the competition, in particular thanks to this OTA update system, essential for an electric car. Indeed, the software is intrinsic to the management of recharges. Since Tesla, infotainment is also a key point in the purchasing decision.

We are waiting to see this new Ioniq 5 arrive in France, probably on the occasion of the marketing of the Ioniq 5N. In the meantime, it retains its camera mirrors, its seats with calf extensions and its ventilated seats. So many functions not available on the Tesla Model Y.
